Bobby Orr Scores Points with Jason Bay at Fenway
Jason Bay plays with his back to the Green Monster all the time as the Red Sox left fielder.
But he wasn’t about to turn his back on the opportunity that presented itself as he took the field in the seventh inning Wednesday.
Bay was called over the door of the Green Monster by none other than Bobby Orr, the greatest hockey icon in Boston history. The two exchanged handshakes and Bay was like a kid all over again.

Bay grew up in British Columbia, Canada loving hockey. He, like many Canucks, can recite his hockey heroes growing up like Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux.
But in the seventh inning of Wednesday night’s game, he had a moment many Canadians dream of.
“He’s an icon, not just for hockey but Canada,” Bay said. “So, you grow up in Canada, someone when I came here said, ‘He’s really big for hockey in Boston.’ And I thought, ‘Yeah, maybe Boston for you guys but he’s a Canadian icon.’ He ranks right up there with Gretzky and Lemieux I think as far as what he did for hockey. I heard from a lot of people he’s a really nice guy. For him to come out and do that is something I won’t soon forget.”
J.D. Drew, who did not play Wednesday night, gets an assist for setting up the chance meeting, according to Bay.
“I actually knew he was in there,” Bay said of Orr. “J.D. had heard through the in-house feed that he was in the Monster. I was under the impression he was going to heckle me or something. He waved me over. I had a little heads up so I wasn’t totally shell-shocked but still a thrill, nonetheless.”
Bay was grateful to Drew for the heads up.
“I don’t know from that faraway that Bobby Orr was waving me over,” Bay said. “I thought it might have been the scoreboard guy. I kind of had an idea of what was going on.”
On a night that Fenway Park celebrated its 500th consecutive sellout, it was Bay who may have taken home the best memory of any fan in the park.
