Sami Zayn, Christian and Latest WWE NXT Developmental News

Ryan DilbertApr 2, 2014

WWE NXT standout Sami Zayn will tour with the company's biggest names, a trip that Christian may not go on as his journey may instead take him to WWE developmental in Florida.

Zayn's language skills afford him a great opportunity. Christian's health may force him to change careers.

In other WWE NXT news, two Ring of Honor wrestlers impressed at a recent set of tryouts, WWE may use NXT to combat indy shows and WrestleMania Axxess is set to have a distinct NXT flavor.

As fans get psyched for the biggest WWE show of the year, the latest word from NXT offers a number of reasons to get excited about WrestleManias of the future when men like Zayn will step into that spotlight.

News on Recent Tryouts

1 of 5

WWE had a long look at potential new additions to the roster. Several indy wrestlers and athletes headed to the WWE Performance Center earlier this month.

The Wrestling Observer Newslettervia Marc Middleton of Wrestling Inc, noted the following about those tryouts:

"

Names being listed for last week's WWE tryouts in Orlando at the WWE Performance Center include ACH, Arya Daivari (younger brother of Shawn Daivari), David Starr, Kevin Steen, Michael Elgin, Rocky Romero, Roderick Strong, Ronny Reeves, Willie Mack and Zane Dawson.

"

The report also says that both Steen and Strong stood out, with Strong being the most impressive. Strong is a former Ring of Honor world champ and a tremendous talent. He is about Daniel Bryan's size, which could hurt his chances.

Steen isn't built like the prototypical WWE Superstar either but has a wealth of experience. The Wrestling Observer Newsletter has named him the best brawler of the year three times.

Bodybuilder Matt Dawson was also at the WWE Performance Center and gave some insider perspective on the experience.

He wrote on JTStrong.com that the tryout was "the most difficult thing I have EVER done, as far as athletics go." He also praised the trainers, painting a picture of professionalism.

Dawson, Steen and Strong will have to wait about two months to see if WWE was impressed enough with them to sign them on.

Sami Zayn Scheduled for Saudi Arabia Tour

2 of 5

Sami Zayn boasts a skill that none of his NXT counterparts have—he speaks Arabic.

Zayn is Canadian and of Syrian descent, per WWE.com. That background, along with his dazzling in-ring work, has led to a major opportunity. He will join some of WWE's biggest names when the company heads to Saudi Arabia for three dates starting April 17.

John Cena, Sheamus, Randy Orton and Alberto Del Rio are scheduled for the tour as well.

Connecting with fans over there and putting on the kind of spectacular matches he regularly does for NXT will certainly force company officials to pay even more attention to him.

NXT May Run Live Event During Next Year's WrestleMania Weekend

3 of 5

WrestleMania weekend has become a celebration of all things pro wrestling. WWE reportedly wants NXT to compete with all the indy events that flock to the WrestleMania host city.

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter, via Marc Middleton of Wrestling Inc, reports the following:

"

There has been talk of WWE running some NXT live events in the San Jose area during WrestleMania 31 week in 2015 as a way to counter some of the independent wrestling shows that will be booked outside of Santa Clara county.

"

Ring of Honor, EVOLVE, SHIMMER Women Athletes and Dragon Gate USA are all set up to entertain fans in New Orleans. They may find themselves with fewer arenas to choose from if WWE developmental is battling for fans' money and time when WrestleMania makes its way to California next year.

It's understandable that WWE wants to rake in the biggest percentage of WrestleMania weekend money for itself, but it will be a shame if the company pushes the indy promotions out.

The money those companies bring in is nothing compared to WWE's take. They also offer a different wrestling flavor for those who have only tasted what WWE cooks up.

Christian, Future NXT Trainer?

4 of 5

Christian suffered another concussion on March 24, per Mike Killam of WrestleZone.com. That has led many fans to speculate whether the former world champ's in-ring career is over.

That discussion has reportedly made its way to the locker room as well. The Wrestling Observer Newsletter, via Marc Middleton of Wrestling Inc, reported that there is talk backstage of Christian retiring and that he "would make a great NXT trainer."

Whoever may be saying that is absolutely right.

Christian has been wrestling for nearly 20 years. He has siphoned an impressive amount of production from his physical gifts, a skill he can hopefully relay to newcomers.

His fans aren't likely ready for him to retire, but he may have a new line of work awaiting him.

NXT at WrestleMania Axxess

5 of 5

The merging of NXT and WWE continues at WrestleMania.

Prospects will be a huge part of the WrestleMania Axxess experience. WWE.com lists a number of autograph sessions from Thursday, April 3, to Sunday, April 6, featuring the likes of Mojo Rawley, Paige, Sami Zayn and Adrian Neville.

WWE is wisely tossing a few main roster stars into these sessions to tempt fans as well.

The WWE Network will showcase some of the Axxess happenings on editions of the new show WrestleMania Today, which begins on Thursday night (per a WWE press release). This is yet another opportunity for the NXT stars to connect with fans, something WWE is clearly making a priority.
