WWE NXT Results: Winners, Grades, Reaction and Highlights from March 20
This week's NXT featured the return of Sheamus to the developmental brand as he took on "The Artiste" Aiden English.
Also on tap was a showdown between Sami Zayn and Tyler Breeze.
Zayn was coming off of a win over Corey Graves and a Match of the Year candidate against Cesaro. Would he be able to continue gaining momentum by defeating Breeze, or would the high-fashion Superstar have other plans for NXT's breakout star?
Perhaps the match would never even start.
The Adam Rose Experience returned to NXT, and Mojo Rawley brought his hype to the show just two weeks after defeating CJ Parker at Arrival.
Would Rose be able to run Camacho over with the party train, or would the second-generation star rain on Rose's parade of fun?
As for Rawley, he would face an old-school brawler in Bull Dempsey. What would the former collegiate football star do when he was confronted with a real challenge? Would he fold under pressure, or would he use his hype to carry him past Dempsey?
All of these questions would be answered as NXT presented its March 20 episode exclusively on the WWE Network.
Opening Match: Mojo Rawley vs. Bull Dempsey
1 of 7
Coming off of an impressive, dominant performance against CJ Parker at NXT Arrival, Mojo Rawley kicked off this week's show by taking on Bull Dempsey.
The match proved to be a tougher one for Rawley than he expected, as Dempsey set out to make a name for himself against the undefeated youngster. It worked for the majority of the bout, as Rawley faced the toughest competition of his young career in the old school-style brawler.
Ultimately, Rawley fended off the very game Dempsey and delivered his trademark Hyperdrive move for the pinfall victory.
Result
Rawley, via pinfall, following Hyperdrive.
Highlights and Quotes
The appearance of New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski, who is a former college teammate of Rawley's.
The unexpected performance from Dempsey, who really impressed against one of the NXT golden boys.
Grade
C
Analysis
A solid showcase for Rawley, who actually found himself on the defensive for the majority of the bout but managed to fight back and pick up a solid victory.
The match accomplished everything it meant to do, which is continue to introduce Rawley to the audience.
Backstage Promo: Devin Taylor and CJ Parker
2 of 7
Devin Taylor asked CJ Parker about his loss to Mojo Rawley back at NXT Arrival.
Parker showed disgust for Rawley and discussed his plans to humanely rid NXT of the former college football standout.
He finished the brief promo by tossing paper into a recycling bin.
Highlights and Quotes
"Mojo's right; Mojo does stay hyped...on highly modified, genetically processed, high-calorie fast food."
"I am going to humanely dispose of Mojo Rawley."
Grade
B-
Analysis
A solid promo from CJ Parker. He's dropped the ridiculous, over-the-top hippy gimmick and showed some solid frustration and disgust following his loss to Rawley at Arrival.
Like Bo Dallas, Parker was pushed out of the gate as a babyface but was routinely rejected by the NXT audience. A heel turn in which he is allowed to voice his frustration and show some edginess would greatly benefit him.
Neither he nor Rawley has really struck a chord with the audience, so it should be interesting to see how it gets over with the fairly passionate NXT fans.
Sami Zayn vs. Tyler Breeze
3 of 7
Just two weeks after defeating Corey Graves, Sami Zayn prepared to do battle with Tyler Breeze when he was suddenly attacked by Graves.
The master of the Lucky 13 submission hold bashed Zayn's head off the steel post.
Graves looked absolutely emotionless as Zayn laid motionless on the floor around ringside. Commentators William Regal, Byron Saxton and Tom Phillips discussed the disgusting act by Graves, though Regal did admit that those types of actions are exactly what will take him to the top of the industry.
Zayn was checked on by trainers before being helped to the backstage area.
Highlights and Quotes
"Absolutely no conscience and no remorse in Corey Graves, which is something that will take him very far, I'm sure."
Grade
B+
Analysis
A simply yet effective way to continue to the rivalry between Sami Zayn and Corey Graves.
Two of the more talented individuals on the NXT roster, both men have a much better match in them than the one they delivered in the main event two weeks ago. Allowing their rivalry to unfold over the next few weeks before wrapping it up with a longer, better match will only help them achieve the match they are capable of.
Backstage Promo: Sheamus, Aiden English and Devin Taylor
4 of 7
Devin Taylor caught up with Sheamus, who was visiting NXT this week. She asked him about the time he spent with the developmental brand, but before he could really answer her, Aiden English interrupted.
He claimed that he was using NXT as a stepping stone, and Sheamus responded by insulting his manhood, then informing him that he would see his "friend" JBL about a match between the two.
Highlights and Quotes
"...using it as a stepping stone to Broadway." -English on how he views NXT
"Funny you should say 'stones' because, from the sound of your voice, your stones haven't dropped yet." -Sheamus
Grade
B-
Analysis
Sheamus made his return to NXT and was interrupted by Aiden English.
The Celtic Warrior took exception to the insulting nature of English's comments about NXT and challenged him to a match in the main event.
There are not many simpler ways to set up a match between two competitors, and despite its simplicity, it worked.
English has been one of NXT's standout characters over the last few months, and the exposure he will receive from taking on Sheamus, a former WWE and World Heavyweight champion, in front of the WWE Network audience will only help him get over and stay over with the fanbase at large.
Adam Rose vs. Camacho
5 of 7
The Adam Rose Experience invaded Full Sail University for the second time as NXT's favorite party-goer took on Camacho in singles action.
Rose, ever the lighthearted competitor, rolled around the ring as he played mind games with his opponent.
Frustrated following a string of losses, most recently to NXT champion Adrian Neville, Camacho quickly became fed up of Rose's antics and unleashed his anger on his opponent. He beat down and bloodied the mouth of Rose and nearly put him away on a number of occasions.
Rose, however, reached his boiling point and snapped. He attacked Camacho, caught him with a spinebuster and finished him with the "choo choo" lariat clothesline.
Result
Rose, via pinfall, following a lariat clothesline.
Highlights and Quotes
Rose's parade of somersaults caught Camacho off guard.
"I want to be in that Adam Rose party." -Renee Young
"Adam Rose is everything. I want to hang out with him and maybe get his autograph, but that may be too fangirl of me." -Young
"Party pooper!" -NXT fans to Camacho as he beat down Rose
"Thou shalt not mock Adam Rose." -Young
Analysis
There are few acts in pro wrestling right now more entertaining and fun than Adam Rose.
The former Leo Kruger has completely invested himself in the character, and it has paid off in dividends. After going through two other repackaging attempts, he could have easily given up, but he now has a very over character and could easily be called up to the main roster tomorrow and succeed.
The match with Camacho showed that he could withstand adversity and summon anger to fight back and take down his opponent.
Renee Young was excellent on commentary, really putting over how desirable both Rose and his lifestyle is, and it should be interesting to see if there is any interaction between the two in the coming weeks.
Bayley vs. Sasha Banks
6 of 7
After last week's promo in which Sasha Banks and Charlotte of the BFFs threatened Bayley, only to be chased away by Natalya after a brief confrontation, Banks and Bayley squared off with one another on this week's broadcast.
Bayley mocked Banks early in their match only to find herself on the receiving end of a beatdown at the hands of NXT's resident "Boss."
Natalya and Charlotte kept themselves out of the action for the most part, but it was a sneak attack by the latter that inadvertently distracted Banks and allowed Bayley to roll her up for the win.
Result
Bayley, via pinfall, following a roll-up.
Highlights and Quotes
"Some people like to take liberties with what they consider the unfortunates." -William Regal on the BFFs' treatment of Bayley
"These are the kind of antics that will hurt Bayley, mocking Sasha when she should be trying to beat her." -Byron Saxton
Grade
C
Analysis
A rather nondescript match that put over the conflict between Bayley, Natalya, Banks and Charlotte enough that fans understand but without doing anything to really further it.
Bayley winning was a nice change of pace, as her win-loss record is far from sparkling at this point. Unfortunately, it came at the expense of Banks, who finds herself in the same situation.
One of the subtle things about the match was the facial expressions Banks displayed and has displayed in recent months. Being able to express one's emotions is one of the most important aspects any performer can possess, and Banks possesses it in spades.
Like Paige, any fan watching knows exactly what kind of mood Banks is in during her matches, and it is something that will help her in the long run.
Sheamus vs. Aiden English
7 of 7
The Celtic Warrior's return to NXT capped off this week's broadcast as he took on Aiden English in the main event.
After both Superstars flexed their singing muscles, they flexed their real muscles by unleashing hard-hitting action for the enjoyment of the NXT faithful.
English was incredibly impressive, taking control of the match and wearing down the former World Heavyweight champion with a very physical offense. Sheamus withstood the onslaught of his very determined opponent and, as any great competitor does, fought back and delivered the Brogue Kick for the pinfall victory.
Result
Sheamus, via pinfall, following the Brogue Kick.
Highlights and Quotes
"I'm overcome." -William Regal on English's pre-match serenade
"It seems a few of the people here know you." -English to Sheamus
"It's like looking at a negative with these two. They're the palest competitors I've ever seen." -Regal
"When Aiden says 'Broadway,' he doesn't mean it literally. He means he wants to get to the top." -Regal
Grade
A
Analysis
The point of the WWE main roster stars coming to NXT is to help put over the talent of the future.
Sheamus did just that in this week's main event, as he gave a ton of offense to English. The Artiste looked phenomenal in keeping up with a former champion of Sheamus' stature and never appeared out of place in there against the Celtic Warrior.
To his credit, William Regal went out of his way to put over English repeatedly.
Both men worked extremely hard, and the result was a very physical match between two very hard-hitting competitors to cap off an entertaining week of programming.
