Dusty Rhodes, Sheamus and Latest WWE NXT Developmental News

Ryan DilbertMar 19, 2014

Dusty Rhodes discussed some of the best talents currently sharpening their skills at NXT, a place where Sheamus will arrive this week, Brogue Kick at the ready.

When a Hall of Famer and pro wrestling legend like Rhodes points out his favorites from WWE developmental, it's best to listen and take notes. One day, those men and women may end up being the huge stars Rhodes believes they can be.

Sheamus is among the WWE guests headed to Full Sail University. The Ascension may be there to greet him, but a recent report suggests they may soon be joining him on the main roster.

In other NXT news, WWE scouts college wrestlers, and WWE.com documents NXT's early days via an oral history. From those stories to who Rhodes believes is destined for stardom, here are the biggest NXT stories of the week.

The Ascension Rumored to Possibly Debut at WrestleMania

1 of 5

The Ascension may soon divert their path of destruction to New Orleans.

After The Shield attacked Kane on Monday's Raw, fans had to wonder where that burgeoning feud was heading. WWE may be infusing some NXT into WrestleMania by way of that story.

According to TribLive.com, officials are considering pitting The Shield against Kane and The Ascension at WrestleMania XXX.

Logistically, it makes sense to add the NXT tag team champs to his mix. Kane is going to need help going up against Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose. Viktor and Konnor have had little competition at Full Sail University.

The Ascension's dark aura is something that would seemingly attract Kane as well.

Dusty Rhodes Gives Props to NXT Prospects

So often when wrestling greats from the past are asked about today's product, there is a tone of distaste to their response. Dusty Rhodes, who works with WWE's developmental system, is far more excited about WWE's future.

In a recent interview with Rodolfo Roman, Rhodes spoke on NXT talents whom he is high on.

When asked who fans should look out for in the future, he praised the Divas division as a whole, saying that Paige is "off the hook." As for the men, Rhodes mentioned The Ascension and Adam Rose as top talents.

Most interestingly, he singled out Corey Graves, saying that he believes he is going to be "a huge star."

Graves is sometimes the forgotten man in the list of top prospects, with many folks pointing first to Sami Zayn and Adrian Neville, but it's good to hear someone so influential in the industry recognize Graves' potential.

Having "The American Dream" supporting you is certainly a bonus for those rising prospects.

Note: The audio in the interview is difficult to hear thanks to a strong wind.

WWE Scouting at NCAA Wrestling Championships

3 of 5

If the next Brock Lesnar is competing at the Chesapeake Energy Arena this week, Gerald Brisco will be watching him.

Oklahoma City hosts the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships this week, and Brisco will be there representing the WWE. Jim Ross noted on his blog that Brisco will be attending the event as a scout while Ross will be there as well, but only as a fan.

Ed Ruth and Tony Nelson are a few of the highly ranked talents set to compete at the event.

Ruth has been a dominant force and two-time national champion. Brisco has scouted Nelson in the past, including at a wrestling match in December 2012, per Wrestling Observer Newsletter, via WrestlingInc.com.

WWE powerhouses will be invading Full Sail University.

WWE.com announced that Sheamus will be on the March 20 episode of NXT. On a previous visit, "The Celtic Warrior" battled The Wyatt Family. Who will be there to greet him this time around?

Before long, Big E will be headed to Florida as well. The second man to hold the NXT championship will appear on the NXT tapings on April 24, per WrestlingInc.com.

Will he have a run-in with former NXT titleholder Bo Dallas or be there to battle another up-and-comer?

The main roster's brutes aren't the only ones to get work at NXT, though. As reported by WrestlingInc.com, Kalisto defeated El Local on the dark match before the NXT tapings on March 13.

Both Tyson Kidd and Ricardo Rodriguez have donned a mask for the El Local role in the past. Neither of those Superstars have appeared on WWE TV lately.

NXT Oral History

5 of 5

Before NXT continues its trek toward the future, it first looks at its past.

Anthony Benigno of WWE.com posted an in-depth look at NXT's history, as told by the Superstars themselves. Hear what Daniel Bryan, Kaitlyn and Curtis Axel have to say about their experience with the old version of NXT.

The piece traces NXT's challenge-heavy past from a variety of perspectives.

Luckily, WWE has moved its developmental system away from Divas playing limbo and prospects talking about mustaches. It has instead turned into a throwback wrestling product that is among the best things about WWE every week.
