Attitude Reflects Leadership, Captain...
Kate ConroyJun 10, 2009
He was the USA captain; he is managers' and players' most respected player; he has 4 rings...these are just a few facts on Derek Jeter's resume.
As a fan I look up to him. I walk with head high with a sense of arrogance because he is our captain. He doesn't break promises, on or off the field. A-Rod just makes him look better everyday. It's not all about 'getting mine' as he respects his elders, learns from his peers and the traditions of the Yankees is his pride.
He is 'Captain Clutch,'—Mr. November—and under the microscope of the greatest city on earth, to perform under that pressure, in game-on-the-line situations so flawlessly since the day he came up to the majors, is about as God-like for an athlete I can think of.
I know most of the what I wrote is common knowledge to even the most partial Yankees or baseball fan in general but that's not why I am posting this. I am posting this because he is called washed-up, the worst stats for a shortstop in baseball and it makes me so upset that in sports we cannot give credit to leaders.
A leader is "a person who influences a group of people towards the achievement of a goal." To be a leader, a person must have a deep-rooted commitment to the goal that he will strive to achieve it even if nobody follows him! Someone that I can actually tell a child confidently, with not even a pause to follow him, his example as a person, an athlete and a captain.
Thank you Mr. Jeter for making me believe and for the greatness over the years. You have lots more to go and an thrilled to see you for years to come. My applause has only grown over the years, as you are my captain. You represent a lot more than that to everyone watching you on TV, in the stadium, from your dugout to the visiting teams dugout. It's just who you are but I feel honored to get to be your fan.
