Wrestling vs MMA: Why MMA Beats Wrestling Hands Down
To me there is no competition between these two sports, but to all my fans here, this is the article you have been baying for.
Let's look at the history of wrestling; pro wrestling is basically the freakish offshoot of amateur wrestling.
What happened was wrestling promoters saw that amateur wrestling was not pretty to watch, and no one will pay bucks to watch it on TV or live.
So they "beautified" it, especially Vince McMahon who tried to bring in mainstream media performers so they get some of the publicity.
To a large extent it worked, wrestling became mainstream. There is big bucks, but it's still a one-trick pony with WWE being the only the horse in the race.
That means without any competition, it's become stale, dumb storylines. It's pure stagnation.
Of course, along the way in the beautification process, was steroids, which made the performers look not big, but larger-than-life.
The deaths of wrestlers through steroids is now a well-known fact especially with the Benoit incident last year.
So now let's have a glance at MMA, MMA is like cock fighting, throw two people, get them to fight.
It was initially banned when there were absolutely no rules, and they took this sport to ships coasting in no man's land...but then they started putting in more rules to legitimize the sport and slowly it got accepted in several states.
MMA has the same problem as wrestling, it is run by federations or promotions, there is no world league which is governed by a third party like boxing. The main problem with MMA, is that it is a blood sport, there can be no two ways about it.
But the main thing that shines out with MMA, is that it is a sport, you either win or lose on your merit, therefore it can be termed as sports.
And as with any sports, it can be accepted into mainstream; it already has. People when they talk about MMA, talk like it is boxing. It is practiced more in gyms even for a health reason.
In my opinion, I think wrestling stands on fragile ground, any more drug incidents (they are being very cautious about it with their Health and wellness policy) can have an effect that Vince McMahon's dollars cannot do anything about it.
As long as there is only wrestling promotion, just like gladiators it can be taken of screen any time.
MMA has a bright future, cause it is actually more exciting to watch than boxing which is slightly one-dimensional. I await the day, when the legs from wrestling fall of...until then I just pray...
