Futbol Chronicles: Newcastle Needs Shearer More Than Ashley Realizes

Bleacher ReportJun 9, 2009

Newcastle United may appear to finally solve its financial insolvencies by having a new owner by the end of this month.

But fans are not as concerned about Newcastle's finances as much as they are concerned about whether or not their beloved hero, Alan Shearer, can return to the post as manager and guide the storied club back to Premiership football.

Alan Shearer apparently is in limbo over stalled contract talks with current owner Mike Ashley, much to the disdain of Toon supporters, but reports have indicated that Ashley was reluctant to bring back Shearer on a full-time basis in the first place.

The ongoing contract discussions stalled because Shearer wanted assurances that he can run the management of the club with more power and latitude. Ashley refused, much to the point where he decided that Shearer would be left dangling on a stick.

First and foremost, Alan Shearer is the face of Newcastle United, no matter how Ashley or any other incompetent sports owner would look at it.

Second, Shearer didn't have the talent or financial backing from Mike Ashley to turn Newcastle into a serious challenge for the foreseeable future.

Yes, he was only manager for eight matches or so, but eight matches in a football season is about month and two weeks work of football.

Ashley could have at least done something during that time frame; so much so, that fans and pundits alike began to wonder if Ashley brought Shearer along as a way of shielding himself from the wrath of angry Toon Amy supporters.

Third, Shearer has the personality and popular following all across English football, it can work in his favor if he can find a way to attract rising talent and quality coaches to work with him at the club.

Shearer believes he deserves the chance to manage Newcastle and fans and pundits alike agree that he can build the team up if he is given the proper resources and financing to build the team up.

It will at least another month or so before we even know is Shearer will be back and if Ashley will finally see himself out of the picture.

Until then, we'll have to get used to the usual happenings of Newcastle United and tired fans would be asked to stomach the thought of another long season on the horizon at St. James Park.

Stay tuned...
