How Does Jamie Moyer Spend His off Days?

Shawn CaswellJun 8, 2009

What would you do on your days off if you were a World Series Champion pitcher? Spend your money? Relax around a pool with bikini models? Photo shoots for Sports Illustrated? Nope—not Jamie Moyer.

Yesterday the Phillies got back from the west coast after a long road trip and had a day off before the next series against the NL East rival New York Metropolitans. So what did Jamie Moyer do? Jamie spent his off day holding a fundraiser for The Moyer Foundation. He showed that not only is he a great ballplayer, but he's a great person.

In 2000, Jamie and his wife Karen started the foundation to aid in funding non-profit organizations that help children in severe distress. This includes children with life-threatening illnesses or physical limitations, children who are coping with the loss of a loved one, and children who are victims of abuse or neglect. Since then, the Moyer Foundation has raised over $16 million to support more than 170 non-profit organizations.

Additionally, the Moyer Foundation funds initiatives such as Camp Erin, which is a nationwide network of bereavement camps for children and teens ages 6-17 who are grieving the loss of someone close to them.  With 28 camps in 18 states, Camp Erin is the largest network of bereavement camps in the country.

Created by The Moyer Foundation, Camp Erin is a traditional, fun, weekend-long camp experience, combined with professional grief counselors  The Foundation teams up with Hospice and Home Care groups to establish and run these special bereavement camps.

There is much much more the Foundation does so check out MoyerFoundation.org for more information.

This just goes to show that some players are bigger than the game in many different ways. In an age where athletes are breaking more laws than records, I'm proud to say that Jamie Moyer is now, and always will be one of the best Phillies in my opinion. Counting all of Jamie's off the field victories, I'd say he's won way more than 300. I tip my cap to you, Jamie.
