Is It Easier for Federer with Nadal, Murray and Djoker Knocked Out? Come On!

anil sahaiJun 4, 2009

It is really funny that the media has started insinuating that with Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, and Novak "Djoker" Djokovic out of French Open, this is the "best" chance for Federer to get his career slam.

First, don't forget that Federer still has to beat players who creamed the other top three contenders.

Second, the media seems to imply that if Federer does win the French this year, it would be because he did not have to face the other three. This is absolutely ridiculous. Where was the media last year when Djoker won the Australian? We never saw any reports saying that Djoker won because Federer and Nadal were not in the finals.

ATP rankings are just based on points awarded at ATP tournament events. They do not (and cannot) represent the "true" ranking of players. It would be silly to belittle someone winning a tournament without directly beating "top ranked" players when the "top ranked" players were eliminated by other "lower ranked" players.

Knockout tournament draws are designed to bring in fairness based on (ATP) rankings, but at the end of the day, the winner of the finals is the champion because he is the only player who did not lose in the whole tournament—everyone else did!

Nadal, Murray, and Djoker had their fair chances—but either they could not take the pressure, or could not play well enough and lost. And now that they are out of the race, Federer's run should not be undermined.

Federer played like a champion against Acasuso and then Haas. Those matches could have gone either way, but Federer excelled when chips were down. More so, such an insinuation is also disrespectful to the other players still in the competition.

The media should grow up, and start focusing on what we have instead of reporting on what "would/could" have happened if "someone" was still alive!
