Boston -145 over Detroit

In the second game of a three-game series between two of the better teams in the American League, Josh Beckett will oppose Armando Gallaraga as the Tigers host the Red Sox.

Beckett had a terrific May (3-0, 2.38 ERA) after a terrible April (2-2, 7.22 ERA), and looks to continue his winning ways as he makes his first June start. He brings a 1-1 record with a 4.15 ERA in his career vs. the Tigers.

Gallaraga, Detroit’s starter, is going the exact opposite way that Beckett is. He was 3-0 in April with a 1.85 ERA, but he hit the skids in May, going 0-5 with a 8.49 ERA while allowing 10 home runs.

Gallaraga hopes to turn things around tonight. He has one career start against the Red Sox (in which he allowed five runs in 5 1/3 innings in a no decision last May).

We think Boston and Beckett will continue their winning ways tonight at Comerica.

UNDER 9 Pittsburgh Pirates—New York Mets

This has been quite an interesting series thus far. Pittsburgh took the first two games of the four-game set, including a 3-1 win last night as Zach Duke out-dueled Johan Santana in a brilliant performance.

Expect another low scoring affair tonight at PNC Park, as Mike Pelfrey (4-1, 3.88 ERA) opposes Ross Ohlendorf (5-5, 4.45 ERA). Both pitchers have been pitching really well of late, and the runs should be hard to come by tonight.

New York expects to be without Carlos Beltran, who is battling a stomach virus. They’ve been playing without Jose Reyes and Carlos Delgado, both who have been on the DL.

Pelfrey has been pitching well, despite not having the record to show for it. He’s allowed two runs or fewer in each of his last four starts, but the Mets have not been able to get him a win.

Should be a hard fought, low scoring game tonight in Pittsburgh.
