Top 10 Goals of the Week

That’s all folks!

The shutters have come down on the 2008/09 season, leaving us with the final goals of the week list for the year. Yet not every footballer will be starting the summer holidays in happy spirits.

Readers of the blog will no-doubt have seen Amr Zaki’s amazing self-harm celebration during Egypt’s 1-nil win in Oman over the weekend. (See here.) But Zaki was not alone at sucking in the sun.

Over in Italy, Sampdoria keeper Vincenzo Fiorillo made a complete pigs’ ear of not just one, but two incidents that led directly to goals. First, the so-called shot-stopper glazed his gloves in oil, with a simple cross popping out from his grasp allowing Fabrizio Miccoli the simple tap-in. Minutes later Fiorillo made sure to cement his crap reputation, the keeper inexplicably passing a ball straight to Miccoli, who in turn teed up Davide Succi for the second of the game. The winner of the final schmuck of the week award, however, goes to AEK Athens forward Ismael Blanco for his outstanding effort in being able to miss an open goal from two yards against Panathinaikos.

Onto the list, and happily the final selection of the season produced some fine crackers to round off the year in style.

Controlled shots from distance accounted for goals one, four, six, and eight, while individual flair and close-control were a key factors behind goals two and three.

If you only have time for a few videos though, the showboat of the week can been found at goal nine, two unstoppable blockbusters are located at positions five and seven, while a season-defining volley rounds off the list at number 10.
