Why PSG Striker Edinson Cavani Would Be the Perfect Transfer for Arsenal

James McNicholasJun 4, 2018

Arsenal spent much of the summer chasing Liverpool's Luis Suarez. Having been foiled in their bid to tempt Suarez to London, it seems the Gunners could be preparing an offer for another Uruguayan forward: Paris Saint-Germain's Edinson Cavani.

The Daily Express' Ben Jefferson reports that Arsenal lead the chase for the unsettled striker:

"

Reports in France suggest that Arsenal have expressed an interest in bringing the Uruguayan hitman to the Emirates after learning that he is less than content in Paris.

Cavani is reportedly unhappy at having to play second-fiddle to Zlatan Ibrahimovic at the Parc des Princes and has made discrete enquiries about his options should he choose to leave.

According to Le10Sport Arsenal were one of the first clubs to respond, although Chelsea and Manchester City have also been linked with the player in the past.

This is not the first time Arsenal have been linked with Cavani. Almost exactly a year ago, the Daily Mail suggested that Arsenal were lining up a £30 million bid for the striker, who was then with Napoli. Speaking in January of 2013, Arsene Wenger told The Guardian:

"

I like him as a player. Will he cost a lot of money? That's for sure. Nobody would deny that. Our banker lives just next to me at the moment and he is ready if we find the right player.

We can spend the money that we have decided to spend if it is for a player we think gives us a plus. But I do not want to speak about Cavani because we have not made an inquiry for him.

"

Despite Wenger's confessed interest, the chances of a move for Cavani appeared to be dead when he left Napoli for PSG this summer.

However, the news that Cavani is unsettled in France will have pricked Wenger's ears.

Arsenal are on the hunt for a striker. At the moment, the Gunners are dangerously reliant on Olivier Giroud to be their target-man. Currently, the out-of-favour Nicklas Bendtner is the only plausible alternative.

Cavani would arguably be a more suitable signing for Arsenal than Suarez.

When Arsenal were pursuing the Liverpool man, it was on the basis that they needed a quicker, more mobile striker.

However, Olivier Giroud has since made his position as a traditional centre-forward integral to the shape of the team. Cavani would be a better fit for that role, possessing both the physical frame and football intelligence to play with his back to goal.

He's also a more clinical finisher than Giroud and would provide a greater threat on the break than the Frenchman. Despite his unhappiness in France, WhoScored.com indicates that Cavani has scored nine Ligue 1 goals in as many starts. There are few more consistent strikers in Europe.

Cavani wouldn't come cheap. Arsenal would probably have to smash their transfer record for the second time this season to secure his services.

With that said, his goals could propel Arsenal to a first league title since 2004.

Cavani's arrival in January would be the perfect belated Christmas present for the Arsenal fans.
