Odds Shark computer prediction: 29.1-16.7 49ers
Why the Niners can cover the spread
San Francisco just lost a tough game at New Orleans and is now mired in a three-way tie for the second NFC wild-card spot. So the Niners are scrapping for their playoff lives. QB Colin Kaepernick has had some problems throwing the ball, but the 49ers still rank fifth in the league in rushing. And the defense ranks ninth and just held the high-scoring Saints to 23 points.
Also, the Niners are 4-1 ATS on the road this year and face a Redskins team that has been a meek underdog lately (1-6 ATS, according to the Odds Shark NFL database).
Why the Redskins can cover the spread
Washington leads the league in rushing at 155 yards per game and ranks sixth in total offense, so they can move the ball. They rallied late against Philly on Sunday before RG III threw an ill-advised interception.
Also, the 'Skins have out-gained their last three opponents, while San Francisco has been out-gained in five of its last six contests. Washington also catches San Francisco on the second of back-to-back trips across the country—first New Orleans, now DC.
Smart Pick
Odds Shark's NFL computer says the 49ers will win and cover in a game that plays UNDER on the total. San Francisco has lost two very tough games in a row to two tough opponents, the Panthers and Saints.
Washington has lost two straight games to much weaker competition in the Eagles and Vikings. Go with the computer and take the Niners.
