Cristiano Ronaldo Slams Playacting Mikael Lustig After 'Headbutt' in WC Play-off

Ian RodgersMay 31, 2018

Cristiano Ronaldo scored the only goal of the game as Portugal claimed a slender 1-0 lead over Sweden in the World Cup play-off in Lisbon.

The Real Madrid star headed home the winning goal for the home side in the 82nd minute, connecting with a low cross from Miguel Veloso.

Ronaldo almost added a second goal when he crashed a header against the crossbar two minutes later.

However, the former Manchester United forward found himself at the centre of some controversy earlier in the second half, when he was caught moving his head toward Sweden defender Mikael Lustig.

Television cameras filmed the incident, which appeared to have been missed by the match official during the match.

Ronaldo did receive a harsh yellow card for a trip on Sweden goalkeeper Andreas Isaksson in the second half, but he may have been fortunate to have still been on the pitch to score his winning goal after the incident with Lustig.

But Ronaldo's reaction to Lustig, who did not go to the ground following the incident, was theatrical. The Real star wiped at his eyes as if to call the defender a cry-baby.

Lustig had put a hand to his face but did not make a meal of the incident.

Ronaldo and his team-mates had been unable to break down a resilient Sweden, for whom striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic endured a disappointing night.

But a piece of magic from Ronaldo with eight minutes remaining gave the Portuguese a slender advantage heading into the second leg on Tuesday.
