St. Louis Cardinals Can't Leave Well Enough Alone

JoeSportsFanMay 25, 2009

Imagine if the final scene from The Natural would have happened in 2009. If Roy Hobbs would have smoked a line drive into the upper deck and shattered one of the light standards in a dramatic, unexpected scene it would have been just as spine-tingling to see in person.

But there is no doubt that the team officials couldn’t just leave well enough alone. They would have to put their stamp on it in some form, just to prove to the fans they can.

How are we so certain of this? Because we basically saw it happen in St. Louis last week.

For those who didn’t see the highlights on Baseball Tonight, Albert Pujols roped a bullet that registered a direct hit on the atrocious “Big Mac Land” sign in the upper deck at Busch Stadium in St. Louis. In the process, he instantly knocked out the neon to the “I” as seen here:

The day after Pujols’ partial destruction of the sign, the general consensus around town was that shouldn’t repair the damage rather leave it as a simple, spontaneous daily reminder of Albert’s dominance.

But they couldn’t leave it alone. Instead, the next night there was this new addition to the Big Mac Land sign:

Positively hilarious, Cardinals. We can’t help but to assume that Bob Carpenter had something to do with this.

1979 - Former WWE wrestler and Playboy cover model Ashley Massarro is born. Ashley left WWE after allegations of whoredom surfaced. No, really.

1993 - Carlos Martinez hits a home run by drilling a fly ball off Jose Canseco’s head over the right field wall. The blunder would be the difference in Cleveland’s 7-6 win over Texas, a game which also marked the debut of Canseco’s fishnet lingerie under the uniform. ###MORE###

With Memorial Day behind us, we’re officially in the unofficial start of summer. At least, so we’re told. Be careful out there, especially when you fall off a cliff into a lake — be sure to tread water.

Matt Sebek checks in with a video observation of a very special Los Angeles Dodgers fan from the weekend.

As you probably know by now, Major League Baseball teams wore red caps on Monday in support of Memorial Day. While some teams looked great (Cardinals, Twins, Nationals), they were some that didn’t look *as* hot.  We’ll review the ugly.
