Breeders' Cup 2013 Results: Full Standings from Marathon Stakes
The first race at the 2013 Breeders' Cup is officially over, and London Bridge has come away with the win in the Marathon Stakes.
It was a clear three-horse race down the stretch, but London Bridge was able to pull it out. Things weren't looking good earlier in the race, but somehow he was able to move up by the leaders and then eventually come out on top.
London Bridge hadn't raced since August, and that strategy clearly paid off here. This was the fourth win for the horse in 2013 and his first since June. This was actually his first U.S. start, with his other eight races coming in England and France.
You can see how the rest of the horses finished below.
| 1. | London Bridge | -- |
| 2. | Blueskiesnrainbows | 1 |
| 3. | Wordly | 1 1/2 |
| 4. | Suns Out Guns Out | 2 3/4 |
| 5. | Indian Jones | 3 |
| 6. | Old Time Hockey | 5 1/2 |
| 7. | Pool Play | 16 1/2 |
| 8. | Commander | 18 1/4 |
| 9. | Cease | 21 1/2 |
The big disappointment was obviously Commander in this one. The horse was one of the favorites to win at the Marathon, but Aaron T. Gryder couldn't do much and they finished in eighth.
Two horses that had wins at the G2 level coming into this one were Old Time Hockey and Pool Play. With that in mind, one might have thought that they would have been able to make a nice run. Instead, Old Time Hockey came in sixth while Pool Play came in seventh.
Friday will feature another four races, with Distaff wrapping things up at night. Saturday is where the real action will be, with nine races going on starting just after 3 p.m. ET starting with the Juvenile Fillies.
The big race will be the Breeders' Cup Class, which will start at 8:35 p.m. ET and feature some of the biggest names in the sport, not to mention a $5 million purse.
Trainer Jo Hughes and jockey Mike Smith will be very thrilled with the Marathon win after a very impressive finish. If the rest of the races are like this for the weekend, it's bound to be a wild one.
