Lou, Offense Stay Cool

As it turns out, Lou didn’t erupt and neither did the Cubs offense.

Alfonso Soriano sat, Mike Fontenot broke out of his slump and Derrek Lee homered. None of it mattered, though, as the Chicago Cubs managed just one run against a pitcher with a five-plus ERA in a 3-1 loss to the San Diego Padres.

Chicago’s offense has scored one run or less in all five games during the road trip. They’re batting .166 with a .225 OBP. Three runs total have scored. Pitiful.

How many times did the Cubs swing and miss at one of Josh Greer’s sinking pitches? At balls that weren’t even close to being strikes. Some were in the dirt, others a foot off the plate.

You would think after seeing him twice through the order some guys would lay off those pitches. Not the Cubs who whiffed seven times and failed to draw a single walk against Greer.

This lineup is sad from top to bottom. Lee is the hottest batter with a seven-game hitting streak–and he’s batting .248 for heaven’s sake!

If I were Lou, I’d explode!

Nothing else has worked. Stay the course and we’re looking at a winless road trip and .500 record. Not good.

Poor Randy Wells. The guy should easily have two wins this season, but he’s had little, if any, run support. He was solid again Saturday night. Seven strikeouts and only one walk. Love it!

I still feel Lou is a ticking time bomb. Maybe, he’s saving his show for the homestand? As Lou would say, what can you do?

  • Cubs (21-20) are in fourth place.
  • W: Greer (1-1) L: Wells S: Mujica (1)
  • Make it six straight losses in a row, hasn’t happened since early September last year.
  • Cubs’ starters have a 3.15 ERA during the road trip.
  • Wells last 18.1 innings before allowing his first runs as a Cub.
  • The mark sets a new franchise record breaking Vern Olsen’s 15.1 scoreless streak to begin his Cubs career in 1939.
