Fantasy Football Week 9: Players Who Will Explode for Big Days

Brian MaziqueJun 8, 2018

Expect three teams to be victimized this week by hot quarterbacks. Those three performances will delight fantasy owners who happened to own them in their leagues. Beginning with the much maligned, but under appreciated signal caller in Big D, these guys are set to score big in fantasy football in Week 9.

Tony Romo

The Dallas Cowboys haven’t been very consistent this year as a team, but statistically Tony Romo has been rock solid. Dallas fell to 4-4 after a heartbreaking 31-30 loss to the Detroit Lions in Week 8, but Romo still did well for fantasy owners who have him on their squads.

He threw for just 206 yards, but he did toss three touchdown passes. It was his fifth game with multiple touchdown passes and his third with three or more. For the season, only the Denver Broncos' Peyton Manning and New Orleans Saints’ Drew Brees have thrown more.

Those raw numbers are reason alone to be happy about Romo’s potential performance every week. Factor in that Romo is set to go against the Minnesota Vikings, and the chances he shines increase.

The Vikings have allowed the fourth-most passing yards per game in the NFL at 287.9. It seems almost certain that Romo will put up big numbers against them on Sunday.

Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers host the rival Chicago Bears on Monday night. The Bears defense has been a bend-but-don’t-break unit for years and is dependent on forcing turnovers. This season, the unit has been breaking quite a bit.

The pass defense has allowed 273.7 yards per game and has only generated nine sacks all year. That’s not a formula for success on defense or a good look heading into a clash with Rodgers and the Packers.

Rodgers has been surgically accurate this season with a completion percentage of 67.1 with 15 touchdown passes and just four interceptions. He’s thrown for fewer than 250 yards just once this season. He’s a safe bet to score big against the Bears this week.

It is hard to be more efficient than Newton has been over the last three weeks. He’s completed 77 percent of his passes, throwing for six touchdowns with no interceptions. When you consider he has also rushed for 106 yards and two touchdowns in that span, it is clear things have really come together for him this season.

He’s been on fire and a consistent fantasy performer most weeks.

In Week 9, Newton and the Carolina Panthers will host the Atlanta Falcons. The Dirty Birds haven’t stopped anyone this season, and that’s a big reason why they are just 2-5.

The passing and rushing defense rank 22nd in the NFL as of Oct. 28. Newton’s roll should continue without a hitch against this team.
