Phillies 12, Reds 5: Rollins and Philadelphia Roll Over Cincinnati

Russell WightMay 22, 2009

Jimmy Rollins had four hits, scored two runs, and drove in a run as the Phillies beat the Reds in the rubber game of the three game series.

Philadelphia scored in each of the first four innings to take an early, 6-0, lead.  Reds starter Micah Owings only lasted through three, giving up five runs on six hits.

The inning that really hurt Owings was the second.  Trailing 1-0, Owings had two outs with nobody on and pitcher Joe Blanton at the plate.  He walked Blanton, allowing the batting order to turn over.  Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley, and Raul Ibanez came up with three consecutive hits and the Phillies were up 4-0.

Down 6-0 in the fifth, the Reds battled back.  They scored all five of their runs in the inning, highlighted by a Brandon Phillips three-run homer.

The Reds bullpen was unable to hold down the Philadelphia offense.  The Phillies put the game away by scoring one in the sixth, four in the seventh, and one in the eighth.

Joe Blanton got the win.  He is now 2-3.  Micah Owings slips to 3-4 with the loss.

Edinson Volquez was placed on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to Sunday, May 17.  Homer Bailey has been called up from Louisville and will start on Saturday.
