5 Strikers Liverpool Are Linked with Signing This January

Max MuntonOct 15, 2013

Although Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge are forming a formidable partnership up front for Liverpool, there is still a feeling that the Reds could improve their attacking options come January.

The departure of Fabio Borini out on loan to Sunderland for the season has left Liverpool lacking in the front-line department.

A sudden injury or suspension to either of Suarez or Sturridge could leave Brendan Rodgers looking short of a clinical finisher, although the likes of Victor Moses and Iago Aspas would do well to deputise in a front role.

So don’t be surprised if a striker along with a central defensive midfielder and possibly a right-sided wing-back are the three top priorities for Rodgers’ January transfer wish list.

Today we’ll cover some of the strikers being linked with a move to Anfield this winter.

Christian Tello

Christian Tello, the Spanish 22-year-old forward, is rapidly seeing his chances of regular first-team football at Barcelona decreasing.

Tipped for great things when he made his debut at the Nou Camp three years ago, Tello has not managed to find a way past the Catalan giants’ plethora of attacking superstars.

Tello was recently quoted in the Daily Star as saying he knows of Liverpool’s interest in him; however he also reaffirmed his commitment to Barcelona.

Lacina Traore

Linked with Liverpool in the last few weeks in the Metro has been Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala’s Ivorian striker Lacina Traore.

The cash-strapped side are looking to offload its biggest names, and Traore, who played against Liverpool when the sides met in the Europa League last season, looks to be heading for the exit.

However, “the big man up front” type striker that Traore is seems unlikely to be an attractive proposition for Rodgers, who was quick to ship out Andy Carroll from Merseyside on his arrival at the club last year.

Konstantinos Mitroglou

The 25-year-old Mitroglou is lighting up the Greek league for Olympiakos this season, having already scored four hat-tricks.

Liverpool are amongst a wide range of clubs, including several Champions League teams, keeping tabs on the Greek international, according to the Daily Star.

Diego Costa

Starting the new La Liga season in his most advanced role yet after years as an attacking midfielder, Costa is in fine form for Atletico Madrid right now, with many urging the Brazil national team to give him his first competitive cap at next year’s World Cup.

Liverpool were heavily linked with the feisty 25-year-old during the summer and were said to have triggered a £22million release clause in his contract, according to the Daily Mail. However Costa opted to sign a new contract with Atletico.

Rodgers may still be tempted to move again for Costa, however, eyeing a juicy pairing with Suarez should he be persuaded to swap Madrid for Merseyside.

Alvaro Morata

Real Madrid youngster Alvaro Morata is said to be on Liverpool’s radar, with a report in the Metro suggesting Suarez would move to the Bernabeu in a potential swap-plus-cash deal.

The 20-year-old is highly rated in Spain, but is struggling for first-team games following the arrival of Welsh international Gareth Bale in the summer.

However in the Express, Morata recently made it clear his intentions to stay and fight for a place in the Spanish capital.
