NFL Predictions Week 5: Eagles and Teams Set to Rebound from Losses

Chris RolingOct 2, 2013

Adversity sets aside the good from the bad in the NFL.

How players, coaches and teams as a whole handle adversity dictates how the NFL plays out. If a player can handle the scrutiny from fans and media, he'll succeed. If a front office can handle adversity properly (Hi, Tampa Bay), it can build a winner.

Most of all, if a team can handle week-to-week adversity, it will succeed on the path to a playoff berth. Week 5 is no exception to this rule, with several teams experiencing tough losses a week ago.

Here are three teams that will lead by example with quality victories only a week removed from stunning losses.

Miami Dolphins Slip By Baltimore Ravens

The Miami Dolphins were embarrassed on Monday Night Football by the New Orleans Saints, losing 38-17 on the road while doing little in the way of positives.

The same can be said for the defending Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens. The team lost by a field goal to the Buffalo Bills, while quarterback Joe Flacco was intercepted five times.

Now Miami returns home looking for answers, and the team will find it against the struggling Ravens. Baltimore is mediocre in most areas, but especially when it comes to rushing the football, averaging just 68 yards per game—which plays right into the hands of the Dolphins, and a defense that allows just 98 yards per game.

Miami has won its one home game this year while the Ravens have lost both road contests. Expect the Dolphins to rebound well on a short week behind the arm of Ryan Tannehill. Both teams are playing iffy in the trenches, but Miami has better skill position players and will take advantage late.

Prediction: Dolphins 20, Ravens 17

St. Louis Rams Bounce Back Over Jacksonville Jaguars

The St. Louis Rams have been nothing short of a disappointment so far in 2013 with a 1-3 start, including a humbling 35-11 defeat at the hands of San Francisco last week.

Things will turn around quick for the Rams courtesy of a favorable matchup against the woeful Jacksonville Jaguars.

Jacksonville ranks near the bottom in all offensive categories, which is no better summarized than quarterback Blaine Gabbert's 179 yards passing and three interceptions last week in a loss. Despite the performance, Gabbert will still be starting against the Rams.

St. Louis does tout the worst rushing offense the NFL has to offer, but will encounter little resistance against the Jaguars defense at home.

Prediction: Rams 17, Jaguars 10

Philadelphia Eagles Abuse New York Giants

Two of the NFL's worst defenses collide in an NFC East matchup sure to develop into a shootout from the opening gun.

The New York Giants defense has allowed 31 or more points in all four contests this year, while the Philadelphia unit has allowed 26 or more with a high of 52 last week coming in a loss to Denver.

While the defenses are bad, the Eagles offer more consistency on offense under guru Chip Kelly. Running back LeSean McCoy leads the NFL's top rushing attack against a New York defense that ranks near the bottom of the barrel in run defense.

McCoy, quarterback Michael Vick and others will have no issues running all over New York in a contest that will get ugly fast. Quarterback Eli Manning has done little to take care of the ball with nine interceptions while backed with one of the NFL's worst rushing attacks.

Philadelphia runs away with this one and rights the ship after being destroyed last week.

Prediction: Eagles 33, Giants 20
