Start 'Em, Sit 'Em Week 3: QBs Sure to Have Rough Games

Kyle NewportJun 8, 2018

Early struggles will continue for some quarterbacks, and Ben Roethlisberger is one of the passers who will be in for a rough game in Week 3.

Whether it's because of their opponents or the lack of talent around them, there are several quarterbacks who fantasy owners should reconsider putting in the lineup this week.

Normally these quarterbacks would be locks to start every week. However, they won't be worth a start this week.

Here are a few quarterbacks who fantasy owners should bench this week, with fantasy statistics courtesy of ESPN.com.

Tom Brady, New England Patriots (vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers)

Sit Tom Brady? As crazy as it sounds, it has to be done. For those who have started Brady in each of the first two weeks, it's been a struggle to overcome his poor performances.

The 36-year-old has thrown for only 473 passing yards and three touchdowns in two games. He also has an interception along with a fumble, so he isn't having a good start. The quarterback has put up only 26 fantasy points in two weeks in ESPN standard scoring leagues.

Brady's numbers have only been good enough for 23rd in the league, and his team hasn't helped him. On Thursday night against the New York Jets, 13 of his 19 completions went to Julian Edelman. Teams are going to start keying on him until someone else steps up.

Rookie receivers Kenbrell Thompkins and Aaron Dobson haven't shown that they can be reliable, so Brady doesn't have many options.

His opponent this week, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, had the worst pass defense in the NFL last year. However, it will be much better this season. Darrelle Revis makes the secondary much better. It's unclear if Dashon Goldson will play this week, as Adam Schefter of ESPN.com reported that the safety is appealing his one-game suspension.

Brady will be a risky start until his top targets, Rob Gronkowski and Danny Amendola, get healthy. Even if Gronkowski returns this week, nobody knows how involved the tight end will be in the offense when he returns to the field.

Andrew Luck, Indianapolis Colts (at San Francisco 49ers)

The second-year quarterback hasn't suffered from a sophomore slump yet, but his team hasn't looked great this season. Fantasy owners don't care how teams do, and losing can actually end up helping a player put up big fantasy numbers.

Andrew Luck and the Indianapolis Colts have to travel across the country to take on the San Francisco 49ers. In Week 2, Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson, who is also in his second season, went 8-of-19 for 142 yards against San Francisco. He had a touchdown and an interception as well.

Luck will be in a tough spot this week. The 49ers are going to be out to prove something, so Luck will have a hard time keeping up with Colin Kaepernick and the 49ers.

Indianapolis hasn't been able to put up quality numbers this season, and Luck has only three passing touchdowns in two games. Reggie Wayne dominated the Oakland Raiders to a tune of 96 yards and a touchdown, but he had only 46 receiving yards against a strong Miami Dolphins defense.

Luck will have a hard time getting anything going this week.

Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh Steelers (vs. Chicago Bears)

Pittsburgh continues to struggle on offense. Roethlisberger has led his team to only 17 points, seven of which came at the end of a loss, so put him on the bench this week.

The Steelers have an inexperienced offensive line that has struggled to protect the quarterback and open holes for the running back. The team ranks 31st in the NFL in rushing with only 75 rushing yards in two games.

Roethlisberger has not gotten any help on the ground, and he misses Mike Wallace in the passing game. Heath Miller has missed time with an injury, so the quarterback has had to rely on Antonio Brown and Emmanuel Sanders.

The 31-year-old quarterback has thrown for only 221 yards per game this season and has only two touchdowns compared two turnovers.

Chicago visits Pittsburgh on Sunday night. The Bears had a top-five defense last season, and they ranked eighth in pass defense. Corner Charles Tillman is one of the best in the league, and he has come up with big plays in key situations against elite receivers this season. He already has two interceptions this year.

Pittsburgh's offense is a mess right now, and Roethlisberger isn't putting up big numbers. He ranks 26th among quarterbacks with 19 fantasy points.

Sit Roethlisberger until the Steelers figure out how to improve the offense.
