Preakness Stakes: Baltimore MD

Collin CooperMay 16, 2009

The Preakness is the follow-up race to the Kentucky Derby and run on the third Saturday in May. The 1-3/16 mile race is run at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland and is often referred to as the run for the Black Eyed Susans. There are two side to the Preakness…. there is the whos who, hat wear grandstand crowd and then there is the beer chugging, porta-potty tipping infield crowd. Both are a great time, so pick your poison, but if you are hoping to actually watch the race, opt for the grandstand seating.

Quick facts about the Preakness:

The First race occurred in 1873 two years before the first Kentucky Derby

Tank’s Prospect and Secretariat hold the record for fastest time at 1:53

Four Phillies have won at the Preakness, but none since 1924

Second leg of the Triple Crown Series in horse racing

Purse is $1 Million

Track is dirt and left-handed

Attendance capacity of Pimlico including the infield is around 120,000
