Da'Rel Scott's Fantasy Outlook After David Wilson's Woes

Joseph ZuckerJun 1, 2018

Exit David Wilson. Enter Da'Rel Scott. Tom Coughlin made that move on Sunday night against the Dallas Cowboys, but should you do the same for your fantasy team?

By the time he exited the game and was replaced by Scott, Wilson had carried the ball seven times for 19 yards. More importantly, he fumbled twice, including once in the red zone as the New York Giants were poised to score.

As a result, Coughlin opted for Scott, a third-year running back out of Maryland. He finished with five carries for 23 yards and five receptions for 51 yards.

NFL Fantasy Football thinks it could be a while before Wilson gets back on the field.

Coughlin is certainly in the authoritarian mold when it comes to coaching. He's not going to take too kindly to Wilson's two fumbles, and he'll ride Scott from now on until the former Terp does something stupid.

Scott seems to be a very confident player, saying that the Giants don't need to bring in another running back after Andre Brown went down (h/t The Record's Art Stapleton).

He'll be ready to take the baton as New York's No. 1 running back if that turns out to be the case.

The biggest question for fantasy owners is whether or not Scott has a lot of value. He'll likely be available in just about any league as few would have put him in the top 100 fantasy backs coming into the season.

Not too much is known about him because there's so little to go on. He has carried the ball 11 times for 25 yards in 15 career NFL games. At Maryland, Scott had a very good sophomore season, when he ran for 1,133 yards and eight touchdowns. In his three other seasons, he had a combined 1,268 yards and nine touchdowns.

The one thing Scott has is speed. He ran a 4.34 in the 40-yard dash in 2011. If he can get outside, he can break for some big runs. That's the kind of thing that can be very tempting for fantasy owners. It's nice to have the grinder who can run inside. With the quick back, there's the potential for big runs and big points.

The most obvious scenario for picking up Scott is if you already have Wilson. That way you've got a nice handcuff at the running back position. If Wilson does fail to get in Coughlin's good graces anytime soon, you've got Scott waiting in the wings getting the majority of the carries for the Giants offense. Your fantasy team won't miss a beat.

If you don't have Wilson, whether or not to add Scott becomes a much trickier question. At this point, there's no telling how he'll configure into the Giants offense.

For those who want to possibly make the move right now, he doesn't look like more than a flex option. It's too big a gamble to think he could be a solid No. 2 back in fantasy.

If you've got a spot open on your bench or could part with one of your lesser running backs, it's definitely worth taking a flier on Scott.
