Top Matchups To Watch
(3) Andy Murray vs. Denis Istomin
Andy Murray is looking to continue his excellent run to the top of the tennis world with a fourth-round victory over Denis Istomin on Tuesday evening.
The Scottish superstar has only met the Uzbek challenger once, but it was fairly recently. Murray advanced in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6, during the 2013 Brisbane International Tennis Tournament.
According to Kevin Mitchell of The Guardian, Murray, ranked No. 3 in the world, gave high praise to his 65th-ranked opponent:
"He hits the ball very flat. He served extremely well [against Andreas Seppi] in the third round, when he hit 24 aces. He's played well here and he had a very good match with Novak [Djokovic] in Montreal [where he took a set off the world No. 1 in the fourth round]."
Istomin, who is trained by his mother, will give Murray the solid test he needs going in to the quarterfinals. He may not be the most gifted opponent, but he can do everything at a high level and fine tune the Briton before the tournament toughens up considerably in the next few rounds.
Stanislas Wawrinka vs. Tomas Berdych
This is a highly exciting showdown between two players found inside the Top 10 of the men’s singles rankings.
Berdych is the higher-ranked player at No. 5 while Wawrinka isn’t far behind at No. 10. Both are quite evenly matched on paper, although Wawrinka has the slightest of advantages in the head-to-head department. He has won six of the 11 times these two have faced off against one another.
The Swiss star will be looking to grow that lead Tuesday, but he will certainly have difficulty against his red-hot Czech opponent.
Berdych destroyed Julien Benneteau in straight sets in the third round, nailing gobs of winners and playing almost mistake-free.
Wawrinka is coming off a grueling battle against Marcos Baghdatis that may have taken all the 28-year-old could give in order to advance.
It’s hard to predict who will with this one, but the smart money is on Berdych.
