Atlanta Braves: Full Scouting Report on Each September Call-Up

Daniel KockSep 4, 2013

September has arrived, and the Atlanta Braves (85-53) have made some moves to help bolster the roster for the final month.

With the Braves still holding a 15-game lead in the division, manager Fredi Gonzalez will be able to use more backups over the last few weeks to give starters some rest.

The Braves would like to wrap up the top record in the National League and have home-field advantage until the World Series, but the ultimate goal will be to have guys fresh for the postseason.

So while the Braves may not have the most exciting or flashy call-ups in 2013, they will likely see significant playing time over the final month.

Here's what you need to know about the guys general manager Frank Wren has called up for the final games.

1. Jose Constanza

1 of 3

Hit: 3/5

Power: 1/5

Run: 5/5

Arm: 2/5

Field: 3/5

Jose Constanza adds the element of speed that can be crucial in late-game situations.

Whether it's as a pinch-runner or defensive substitution, there is value in having a speedster such as Constanza.

The 30-year-old offers little to no power (two career MLB home runs) but uses his speed to hit for a decent average (.270 career in MLB).

The fact that Constanza doesn't walk more (zero walks this season) hinders his value as a pinch-hitter.

His greatest value over the final month will be serving as a late-game defensive substitution or a pinch-runner.

2. Freddy Garcia

2 of 3

Fastball: 3/5

Off-speed: 3/5

Control: 4/5

Freddy Garcia brings experience and the ability to eat innings as a spot-starter or long reliever as evidenced by his 4.2 innings of work on Sunday against the Miami Marlins.

The 36-year-old doesn't feature great stuff anymore, but makes up for it with location and control.

Garcia sat in the upper-80s and touched 90 with his fastball on Sunday. His curveball, slider and changeup can be effective off-speed pitches when located properly.

Garcia demonstrated his command on the mound in his 4.2 scoreless innings by walking just one batter while throwing 38-of-53 pitches for strikes.

The veteran, right-hander has limitations at the MLB level but still showed he is capable of getting MLB hitters out.

His value will be eating innings, whether in a long-relief role or as a spot starter.

3. Kameron Loe

3 of 3

Fastball: 3/5

Off-Speed: 2/5

Control: 2/5

Kameron Loe had a brief stay in Atlanta in July before being demoted to Triple-A Gwinnett.

Loe's greatest strength on the mound is his "heavy" fastball that sits around 90 but features downward movement.

The 31-year-old can be an effective ground-ball pitcher when the sinker has its movement and he's locating the pitch.

Loe gets in trouble due to his propensity to be wild (1.98 WHIP in 2013), as well as a lack of complementary off-speed pitches.

Loe's greatest value will be working in middle innings, against a right-handed hitter with runners on base, in hopes of Loe recording a ground-ball out.

However, Loe will be asked to eat some innings on Wednesday in a spot start for Julio Teheran to give the young starter some rest.

Consider me a skeptic on the amount of quality innings Loe will offer, and young pitchers Aaron Northcraft or Sean Gilmartin would have been much more intriguing options.
