Star Watch: (2) Rafael Nadal vs. (22) Philipp Kohlschreiber
The star of the 2013 men's tennis season has been No. 2 Rafael Nadal, winning an ATP-best nine titles and compiling a record of 53-3. He won his eighth French Open title and currently owns more 2013 ATP event championships than Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Andy Murray combined.
On Monday, Sep. 2, Nadal will face No. 22 Philipp Kohlschreiber in the fourth round of the U.S. Open in hopes of moving one step closer to adding another title to his trophy case.
Nadal is 9-1 all-time against Kohlschreiber, owning a record of 5-0 when they play on hard court surfaces. With that being said, Kohlshreiber defeated Nadal in 2012 and is playing outstanding tennis during the U.S. Open.
Most recently, Kohlschreiber took down John Isner by a score of 6-4, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5).
Nadal has been impressive in his own right, winning his first three matches without dropping a single set. He's out-dueled his opponents by a count of 54-20 in terms of games won and is reminding everyone why he's won 12 major championships, including the 2010 U.S. Open.
A win over Kohlschreiber would clinch his berth in the quarterfinals.
Star Watch: (7) Roger Federer vs. (19) Tommy Robredo
The U.S. Open has long been home to the unparalleled greatness of all-time great Roger Federer. He won the U.S. Open in five consecutive years, earning the title in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008.
In the three years since, Federer has reached the finals once, had three berths in the semifinals and made four appearances in the quarterfinals.
During the fourth round of the 2013 U.S. Open, Federer will take on No. 19 Tommy Robredo of Spain in hopes of extending that streak of glory. Robredo has reached the fourth round of the event in eight separate years and is more than capable of breaking through to the quarterfinals.
Unfortunately for Robredo, he's 0-10 all-time against Federer.
Federer has struggled in 2013, winning just one ATP Tour title and failing to earn a Grand Slam championship. During the U.S. Open, however, Federer won his first three matches without losing a single set to his first three opponents.
The question is, can Federer defeat a ranked opponent to reach the quarterfinals in New York? It seems like an outrageous question, but in 2013, anything is possible with the great one.
