Ring Rap with Matt: Even the Brightest Stars Can Fade Away

Matthew HesterMay 14, 2009

Hello everyone, as always I would like to thank you for taking the time to read what's on my mind.

What I would like to talk about is some of our future up and coming stars in pro wrestling.

While many including myself, have no doubt that guys like Morrison, DiBiase, Bourne, and many of our other up and comers today have no limit where they can go, let's keep in mind that the wrestling gods upstairs have mean senses of humor.

I have seen, in my over 20 years of watching pro wrestling, have seen many Morrisons and Mike Knoxes.

There have been and will always be talented "can't miss" wrestlers and there always will be. The sad fact of the matter is, people, they can and do miss.

That is not to say I don't want to see these young guys succeed. In fact, it is important to the business that they do. The sad fact is though, for every one "can't miss" that does make it, I can give you two or three that didn't.

Some may not like what I not like what I'm saying, but it is the truth and folks you know it is. Let me toss out a couple of "can't miss" prospects that I remember recently.

Scott Levy "Raven," He made a big splash in ECW he soon afterwords went to WCW. During that time he was touted as one of wrestling's brightest prospects.

In 1999 he quit WCW, he went to the WWF and was stuck in mid card limbo. Although he has held a few singles titles for a short time, he just never panned out to become the star as advertised.

He can still be seen on the indy scene and was recently on TNA.

Mike Awesome began his career in 1989. Awesome didn't really flourish until he went to ECW, where he eventually won the heavyweight title from Tazz.

He soon went to WCW where they stuck him with really bad gimmicks. One that sticks in my mind was Mike Awsome "the fat chick thriller." Even then though he was looked to have a bright future.

He soon went to the WWE, where he spent a very short time before being released. He spent a few years on the indy circuit before retiring in 2006. Mike Awesome died in 2007, another sad day in pro wrestling.

Billy Kidman, a high flyer, made his start in 1994. He went to WCW, where he went on to have a great run. Kidman won the cruiserweight title three times. He had the looks and the skill to become great wrestler.

When the WCW was brought out and he went to the WWE.

It was felt by many he would finally catch the break he deserved. Kidman would go on to have mild success in the WWE.

He never did reach the ultimate level that people thought. Some say due to bad booking but who knows for sure. Kidman is now a trainer for the FCW.

I could go on but I just wanted to point out a few examples for you. Whether it was booking, death, drugs sometimes it just doesn't work out.

As I said before the wrestling gods have cruel sense of humor. No one will really know what's in store for the young grapplers today. In fact, folks, we won't know until their careers are over.

Guys like Morrison can be considered one of the best ever, or he can fall into the conversation of "what ever happened to that guy."

Until that day happens, all we can do is sit back, relax, and enjoy the show.

Thank you for taking a few moments to read this.

I hope your day is a good one and as always, God bless.
