US Open Tennis 2013 Results: Top Seeds Looking Sharp Early

Jesse ReedAug 27, 2013

Getting off to a hot start at the 2013 U.S. Open doesn't guarantee a strong finish, but it doesn't hurt, either.

After all, winning a Grand Slam title isn't easy.

The players who make it to the end of the tournament endure two weeks of physical, emotional and mental challenges. They battle against one another, against their own bodies and against the throng of media that follows their every step.

Therefore, breezing through early-round opponents is beneficial, as it cuts down on the wear and tear players endure in such a long tournament.

These top seeds looked sharp in their first-round matches, which should help them down the road when the going gets really tough.

Rafael Nadal Defeats Ryan Harrison

Harrison 422
NadalX666

Nadal is a former U.S. Open champion, having won the event in 2010.

Given the way he's played on hard-court surfaces this year, he might wrap up his second title in 2013. As noted by ESPN Stats & Info, he's a perfect 16-0 on hard courts this year, and his record on the season is 54-3—easily the best mark of any player on the ATP Tour:

Harrison didn't have a chance on Monday against Nadal, who was dominant at the net, from the baselines and everywhere in between.

Since being ousted in Round 1 at Wimbledon earlier this summer, Nadal has rebounded with a vengeance, winning two ATP World Tour Masters tournaments against stiff competition.

The Spaniard looks indomitable right now, and it'll take nothing less than perfection to beat him at the moment.

Serena Williams Defeats Francesca Schiavone

Schiavone 01
WilliamsX66

When Williams is firing on all cylinders, there isn't a woman on the planet who can stop her, as noted by ESPN:

Schiavone, a U.S. Open veteran who has made it to the quarterfinals twice in her career, looked helpless against the No. 1 player in the world on Monday evening in Flushing Meadows.

Williams was nearly flawless, registering just eight unforced errors, and she dispatched the Italian easily, scoring 13 winners to Schiavone's three. She beat her opponent so badly that Schiavone needed a hug from one of the ball boys at one point.

If Williams can continue playing with the sharp focus we saw from her on Monday, then the rest of the field had better watch out.

By all appearances, it looks like Williams is on track to win her second Grand Slam of the 2013 season.

Agnieszka Radwanska Defeats Silvia Soler-Espinosa

RadwanskaX66
Soler-Espinosa 12

Radwanska has been overshadowed by Williams and Maria Sharapova the past few years, but she's one of the top women's tennis players in the world.

A 12-time winner on the WTA Tour, she has yet to take her game to the requisite level to win a Grand Slam, however. Of the four Grand Slam events, the U.S. Open has boggled Radwanska the most, as she has never gotten out of the fourth round.

However, after reaching the quarterfinals twice already this year and the semifinals once, she appears ready to take the next step.

Soler-Espinosa was thoroughly overmatched on Monday against the Polish star. Radwanska relentlessly dominated the action from the outset, winning 6-1, 6-2, as noted by the event's official Twitter account:

Radwanska nearly doubled her opponent's points total while minimizing her own mistakes. She easily breezed through into Round 2, and another dominant performance could set the stage for her most successful showing at a Grand Slam event.
