Jose Offerman's Rage Still Being Felt By Nathans
Jose Offerman charged the mound after being hit by a slider in the calf in an independent baseball game in August of 2007 and hit the pitcher and the catcher his bat. Offerman hit both pitcher Matt Beech and catcher John Nathans, who was trying to restrain Offerman from hitting Beech.
Now, almost two years later, Nathans cannot even catch a rubber ball consistently due to the injury. He is undergoing therapy today and is suffering from post-concussion syndrome. Nathans almost certainly will never play baseball again, while Offerman continues to play baseball.
Offerman got off with probation while Nathans has problems catching a rubber ball. Offerman has never apologized to Nathans for the incident. Nathans is suing Offerman for $4.8 million, and I hope he collects because Offerman needs to be punished for ending the career of Nathans.
He may never have reached the majors but Offerman took away even the chance of him playing in the majors someday. The incident has not affected Offerman as life goes on for him. His attorney says the $4.8 million amount is excessive but what is really excessive if someone ends the livelihood of a man who may never be able to work the rest of his life.
