2013 Fantasy Football: Best Draft Value Selections Based on ADP

Garrett BakerJun 8, 2018

Once you get into the middle rounds of your fantasy football draft this year, a lot of crucial decisions have to be made. In truth, getting the best value out of your selections will make or break your season.

There are plenty of positional battles going on around the league. There are some situations where one player is above the other on the depth chart and the backup actually has more fantasy value.

I looked at Average Draft Positions (ADP) and found situations where one player was being way overdrafted while their backup or competition was being selected way below them.

My first and strongest piece of advice would be to draft Ronnie Hillman at 121 while passing on Montee Ball at 46.

This is a pretty baffling disparity to me. Ball is a talented back, but he's not particularly explosive—and rookie running backs are always risky.

Hillman is an underrated, fast-twich runner who was a third-round pick two years ago and, as reported by The Denver Post, is reportedly in the lead for Denver's starting role.

It's obviously still early, and those depth charts don't mean a ton now, but it's still mind-boggling to me that Hillman is currently the lead guy yet is going 75 picks after Ball.

With Mike Wallace gone in Pittsburgh, look at Emmanuel Sanders at 107, not Antonio Brown at 65. Brown was a little disappointing in 2012, and it's unclear if he can handle the added pressure of being a No. 1 receiver.

Ben Roethlisberger likes to spread the ball around, and the X receiver in Pittsburgh's offense usually does well (look back at guys like Plaxico Burress and Antwaan Randle El), so Sanders has a big opportunity.

Sanders is very talented and entering a contract year, which could be a perfect marriage of skill and motivation for him to elevate his game.

If he can stay healthy and use his speed to take advantage of the increased role, Sanders will finish with similar stats to Brown. I'd be willing to bet on Sanders when looking at the difference in their ADP.

Undeniably, a great value in St. Louis can be had in Chris Givens at 116 instead of Tavon Austin at 73. Givens is entering his second season after a surprisingly successful rookie campaign.

Austin is extremely talented, but he's a rookie and defenses will focus on him right off the bat to try and make his job difficult.

I don't know if Jeff Fisher and Brian Schottenheimer can be creative enough to utilize Austin to his full potential, and I'm also not confident in Sam Bradford's ability to get the ball to him consistently.

Meanwhile, Givens could actually benefit from Austin taking a lot of the attention of defenses, and improve on his rookie totals of 42 catches and 698 yards.

Bernie Miklasz of STL Today as well as Michael Gallagher of SB Nation are both excited in St. Louis about Givens, but it seems like fantasy owners aren't listening.

Out in Green Bay, draft Johnathan Franklin at 119, not Eddie Lacy at 63. There is a lot of uncertainty about the Packers' running back situation with nobody really pulling ahead yet.

While Lacy was a higher draft pick, I think Franklin is nearly as talented as a runner and more versatile, which makes them equally valuable.

Lacy has been banged up during training camp, as has DuJuan Harris, who will get his share of carries as well.

There's going to be a number of guys getting carries in Green Bay, so taking Lacy almost 60 spots ahead of Franklin is unwise.

Franklin has more big-play potential than Lacy, and although he may not get as many carries, I think he will have a bigger role in Aaron Rodgers' high-octane passing attack.

Effectively, taking anyone in Green Bay's backfield is a risk, so I'd be happier to take a big-play threat in the 12th or 13th round than Lacy in the 6th or 7th.

Lastly, take a flier on Rod Streater at a ridiculously low 226, not Denarius Moore at 103. For starters, Moore himself is no special talent, and by all accounts he has been really inconsistent so far in camp.

Meanwhile, although most people don't even know who Streater is, he apparently has been really impressive this summer and has a pretty good chance to be the go-to guy in Oakland, which Bleacher Report's own Christopher Hansen discusses here.

Streater is coming into his second year in the league after being picked up by the Raiders as an undrafted free agent. He'll be looking to make a name for himself in 2013, and it would be much wiser to grab him in the last round of your draft than waste a 10th round pick on Moore.

All ADP statistics taken from FantasyPros.com, which uses a consensus ADP from six sources. Stats accurate as of August 12th.
