Sean Casey Is One of The Most Genuine People You Will Ever Meet

Russell WightMay 11, 2009

I have been peroozing around, checking out other baseball blogs. I came across a great post about Sean Casey announcing his retirement. The author writes, "Chances are you, too, know someone who was touched by Casey's time, generosity and faith."  I was, and wanted to share the story.

I met my wife in 1999. She began following the Reds and going to games with me. Sean Casey quickly became her favorite player. I guess she has a thing for big dudes with a little junk in their trunk. Anyway, back to the story...

When I wore a younger man's clothes, I worked at Cooper Stadium, home of the Columbus Clippers. During the summer of 2002, the Louisville Bats came to town and Sean Casey was with the club on a rehab assignment.

I still knew the visitor's clubhouse man, so I went over to the stadium that afternoon, and Sean was on the first van to arrive at the clubhouse. I introduced myself, and asked if he would mind meeting my wife. Not only did he agree, but he was just as excited to surprise her as I was.

I called her, knowing she was in the car and not far away, and told her to meet me at the stadium. She was worried, not knowing why I needed her to hurry over. When she arrived, I said I want you to meet a friend of mine. Sean Casey comes around the corner, smiles and gives her a big hug. He and I are quite amused by her reaction, hyperventilation and light-headedness.

After the initial shock, we stood there talking like old friends. We talked about being parents, having just recently found out that my wife was pregnant. We didn't get an autograph. We didn't even take a picture. We just talked with a guy who is one of the nicest, most genuine people on the face of this earth.
