WWE SummerSlam 2013: Stars Who Will Surprise Fans the Most

Sharon GlencrossJul 30, 2013

While the upcoming SummerSlam pay-per-view is currently being promoted around its two main matches—Brock Lesnar vs. CM Punk and Daniel Bryan vs. John Cena—other wrestlers will surely be given the chance to shine on the three-hour card, too.

With this in mind, let’s take a look at some of the stars who could very well end up surprising everyone and stealing the show next month in Los Angeles.

Under-estimate these guys at your peril…

5. Big E. Langston

1 of 5

Since debuting at the end of 2012, Big E. Langston hasn’t been given a whole lot to do.

Indeed, for the most part the star has been relegated to the background, serving as the bodyguard for conniving Diva A.J. Lee. For anyone who saw how great the performer was on NXT, this has to be a disappointment.

However, in recent weeks, the star has been pushed to the forefront as he battles former friend Dolph Ziggler. The two are likely facing off at SummerSlam next month. Don’t be too surprised if Langston, a very decent big man worker by WWE standards, churns out a terrific match with Ziggler at the event.

4. The Miz

As The Miz officially announced at the San Diego Comic Com, he is due to serve as the host of the SummerSlam pay-per-view.  It’s an interesting role for the star, who has been used less and less by WWE as a wrestler in recent times.

No doubt Miz will bring along his trademark enthusiasm to the event, which is being held in his home town of Los Angeles. While many may roll their eyes, don’t be too surprised if he ends up being an unexpected highlight of the card.

3. The Usos

After years of being marginalized, tag team Jay and Jimmy Uso have finally risen to prominence in WWE thanks to their recent battles with The Shield.  It helps that, due to Jimmy’s real-life relationship with Naomi Knight, the two are also getting exposure on new WWE/E! reality show Total Divas.

If television is any indication, presumably they, along with Mark Henry, will take on Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns at SummerSlam—maybe even with the tag team belts on the line—in what should be a great wrestling match.

2. Mark Henry

4 of 5

SummerSlam may very well be a big test for Mark Henry.

As his first pay-per-view since he turned babyface, it will be important to see if he gets a loud and welcoming reaction from the Los Angeles crowd, thus validating his new character direction.

Considering Henry’s immense talent, don’t be too shocked if he ends up exceeding expectations and getting one of the best reactions out of anyone on the card. Fans have been itching to get behind the charismatic star for ages now.

1. Randy Orton

5 of 5

Could Randy Orton show up at the end of the John Cena/Daniel Bryan match and cash in his Money in the Bank title shot, shocking the world?

It seems a strong possibility. And Orton has strongly hinted on television that he intends to wait until Cena is at his most vulnerable to cash in. Could SummerSlam showcase Orton’s major—and long awaited—heel turn? We’ll have to wait and see. But reports (F4Wonline via WrestleZone) indicate this is at least being considered by the booking team.
