Why the Wyatt Family Needs to Make a Big Impact Early in WWE

The Doctor Chris MuellerJun 8, 2018

The Wyatt Family finally debuted on Monday after weeks of highly entertaining vignettes, but their work is far from over when it comes to breaking through with the WWE fans. They need to make an impact right away.

They may have received a great reaction during their debut when they attacked Kane, but they are not the kind of Superstars who will appeal to all WWE fans.

They certainly do not fit the mold of a typical WWE Superstar, and that will turn some younger and casual fans off. Especially those who do not like the implied message of the characters and their actions.

Their Look

WWE Superstars are usually well-groomed and fit into a certain category. So to see three guys who look like the illegitimate triplets of Mike Knox come out and act like savages from a cult had to be jarring for a few fans.

Even though we have seen many Superstars who don't "fit the mold" of a typical Superstar win a major title, they usually have a huge uphill battle compared to someone who looks like Randy Orton.

The corn-fed physiques, unkempt looks and deranged antics are what helps The Wyatt Family stand out from the crowd as unique, but unique is not what every wrestling fan is looking for.

These three men will have to perform at a higher level than most in order to ensure long careers in the WWE.

Their Gimmick

Bray Wyatt, Erick Rowan and Luke Harper are all talented individuals who will do an excellent job selling the gimmick, but that does not always guarantee the desired response from the crowd.

Any character who has been perceived as off in the head has been met with some resistance from fans. In fact, there is a long history of it in WWE.

Characters like Goldust and Mankind were designed to elicit a specific response from the viewer, and even though they were successful in doing that, there was always the risk of losing a fan with a risky gimmick.

WWE is now a kid-friendly PG show. To have a cult leader who is designed to frighten you might not be what some parents have in mind for their five-year-old.

Mick Foley is the example everyone likes to use when talking about successful wrestlers who weren't your typical Superstar, but not everyone can be the next Mick Foley.

How They Can Succeed

The Wyatt Family already have the benefit of a very unique gimmick on their side. What they need to do now is prove that they belong in the ring with the rest of the roster.

For most of the WWE Universe, these guys are virtually unknown. NXT gets a fraction of the audience Raw gets each week, so most fans see these men as new Superstars, except those who remember Wyatt as Husky Harris.

Wyatt is the son of Mike Rotunda, better known to the world as IRS. He is also the brother of Bo Dallas, the NXT Champion and the Superstar who won a chance to be in the Royal Rumble this past year.

Wrestling is in Wyatt's blood, but he is not alone. Harper and Rowan are two powerful individuals with a lot of aggression in their performance and more quickness than you would expect from two men their size.

How successful the Wyatt Family ends up being will be due to how the crowd reacts to them after the initial buzz of their debut has worn off and how well they do in the ring when it comes time to wrestle.

Debuting right before Money in the Bank could indicate the possibility of an appearance at the pay-per-view. It would certainly help them ride the momentum of their debut into Raw on Monday.

What do you think? Will the Wyatt Family be successful in WWE? And what do they need to do in order to engage the entire WWE Universe?
