WWE Tag Teams and a New Format for the Division: Trios Tag Champions

Tyson JonesJun 8, 2018

Now, hear me out. I know the booking of the tag team division has been...checkered at best, and it's likely that adding another belt to that isn't going to help change that.

With that said, I do believe that the WWE could benefit from transforming their WWE into a Trios division, or even modifying it so that it can be switched back and forth between a Trio and a tag team division. It's something that's come into style recently, and with the upcoming arrival of The Wyatt Family, WWE may soon have to do something to appease these trios.

I believe that the inclusion of a third, perhaps higher-tiered Superstar along with a tag team allows for more even matches in the tag team division and makes associations and feuds more entertaining.

The Spear of Justice and Special Ops Seth have already gone head-to-head with the biggest names the WWE has to offer. With that in mind, it's very hard to imagine them dropping the belts to a team like The Usos or The Prime Time Players, now isn't it? However, if we were to throw...Mark Henry in with Titus and Darren, or if perhaps The Rock were to join his family and side with The Usos, then I think challengers to The Shield's title would be a little more realistic.

Not only would it allow for more realistic challengers to The Shield in the long run, but it would also allow the WWE to potentially push more stars.

Tag teams are generally good vehicles for covering up weaknesses and highlighting strengths. Simply allowing the addition of one more body to a team allows that to be used to an even greater effect for the roster in the long run. It could also allow WWE to use the Trio vehicle more often for such things like storyline development and such.

Along with that, a Trios title would allow a group of three such as The Shield, who pride themselves on being equals, a way to further demonstrate that. As opposed to two people holding a tag title and one person holding a singles title, this would allow them to look even more like equals to the casual audience, who may see Dean as being a step up because he won a title by himself.

This works fine for a group like The Wyatt Family, which does have a clear leader, but for The Shield it does throw something of a curveball.

Another reason I think the WWE should look further into the idea of adding a third belt to the tag division is simply for the entertainment value a three-person unit can bring. I threw in the idea of having The Prime Time Players and Mark Henry join forces, but there are other ideas as well.

Team Hell No currently works closely with Randy Orton (who has his own anger management issues) and at one point The Miz. International Airstrike could bring even more to the ring with a returning Evan Bourne or Adrian Neville, 3MB is always good for a laugh, and we all know the fans would love to see Cena, Sheamus and Orton as a team (perhaps not the hardcore fans, though).

How over would Ryback get by holding all three of the tag titles himself, though? Then Ryback literally would rule (the tag team division, at least). Heck, I've always said Xavier Woods would make a good Little Jimmy. Having him team up with Truth and either Kofi or a reformed Awesome Truth, and you've got a fun tag team for the future, or you could perhaps have Truth joining up with Planet Funk.

Point is, there's a lot you could do with a Trios title, and the best part is, if done correctly, it's something you'd only bring out for special occasions. As of now, there's a lot of Six-Man Warfare going on in WWE, and with the arrival of the Wyatt Family, I don't see that stopping any time soon.

WWE should look to capitalize on that. While it's going on now, who's to say a two-man team doesn't actually beat one of the three-person teams who use the Trios rule? For the time being, we only need the two belts, but if a strong three-person unit arrives and wants to use the Trios rule, the champion can decide to say yes or no, giving us a handicap match.

Done right, this can help put over all involved. With a good team having a strong reign, if they can turn back handicap challenges, they look great, and ending said strong reign makes the opposing Trio look good as well. It's a potential win for all involved.

It's not a totally foreign idea (albeit an idea used in some foreign places).

Asistencia Asesoría y Administración (AAA) has a Trios tag championship, Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) has a Trios tag championship, New Japan Pro Wrestling has an Openweight tournament specifically for three-man teams, and Dragon Gate, Dragon Gate USA and Dragon Gate Evolve also feature a Trios tag championship.

Oftentimes, these championships are different from the standard tag team titles. I think the idea has a lot of merit, and WWE has a wealth of talent on the roster, so it's not as if they wouldn't have enough of a roster to support the idea.

Overall, I think the idea has merit. The booking would need to improve, but I think the quality of the show would improve as well with the creation of a Trios title. Let me know what you think of the idea. Thanks for reading.
