French Open 2013: Odds Each Favorite Gets Upset Before Roland Garros Semis
Almost a week into the 2013 French Open and the biggest names in the Men's draw have managed to stay in the hunt for the prestigious slam title. But with every match representing a step up in competition, no one is safe.
Entering the tournament as a top seed means dealing with pressure and getting everyone's best shot. Navigating the bracket to the semifinals won't be an easy task for everyone; there's sure to be some close calls and upsets on the way there.
Here's a close look at the odds Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer are upset before reaching the semis in Roland Garros.
Men's Draw
Rafael Nadal
Usually all eyes are on Novak Djokovic at a slam, but the French Open is all about No. 3 seed Rafael Nadal. Everyone wants to know whether or not he can continue his dominant run at Roland Garros and win an incredible eighth title in nine appearances.
Three rounds in, he's still alive and headed toward the semifinals. However, he hasn't been as dominant as he has in the past.
Nadal's dropped the first set to in both of his first two matches (first to Daniel Brands and then to Martin Klizan, both 4-6). His 52-1 career record at Roland Garros speaks for itself, but it's rare to see him drop the first two sets like that.
Things won't get any easier for Nadal as he advances. Due to scheduling issues forced by weather, Nadal will be forced to play games on back-to-back days while his opponent, Fabio Fognini, had a day to rest.
Nadal isn't happy about the circumstances and told BBC Sport about it, highlighting the fact that it puts him at a disadvantage:
"I cannot play third after men's and girls when my possible opponent plays second after girls. That's not fair. And today I was playing almost three hours on court, and my opponent was watching the TV in the locker room
"
While Nadal's track record certainly makes him a favorite to be in the semis, the road will be difficult. Rest is as important as ever for the Spaniard after dealing with knee injuries. Throw in the play of Richard Gasquet, who has won all of his matches in straight sets and could be awaiting Rafa in the quarterfinals, and the odds decrease a bit.
Odds of Upset: 20/1
Novak Djokovic
The French Open has always been a bit of a disappointment for Djokovic. Out of all the slams, his career winning percentage is the lowest at Roland Garros, with a career record of 31-8. However, with Nadal at least slowed down, this represents Djoker's best chance to win the tournament.
If he wants to meet Rafa in the semifinals, he'll have to continue his current dominance.
Djokovic has breezed through his first two matchups. He has yet to drop a set with victories over David Goffin and Guido Pella already in the books.
Continuing his impressive play against Grigor Dimitrov will be a difficult task. Djokovic is 2-1 against him in his career, but the loss came on the clay this year at Madrid.
If he gets past that test, he'll have more accomplished players to deal with such as Philipp Kohlschreiber, who is also 1-2 against Djoker, with the one win coming on clay.
Odds of Upset: 5/1
Roger Federer
Tennis' elder statesman seems to be putting together a nice run at Roland Garros. Through three matches, he has yet to lose a set and is the first of these three to punch his ticket to Round 4.
However, his loss at the Madrid Open to Kei Nishikori is proof that Federer isn't immune to catching the upset bug on clay. He can't afford to have an off-day if he wants to battle his way back to the semis once again.
The good news for Federer is that he holds favorable matchups to get to the final four. He already holds a 2013 clay-court victory over his Round 4 opponent Gilles Simon and a 9-3 career mark against likely quarterfinal foe Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
Barring a suddenly awful performance, we should see Federer in the semifinals for the second year in a row.
Odds of Upset: 20/1
