French Open 2013: 3rd-Round Matches We're Most Excited to Watch

Rob GoldbergJun 8, 2018

The first two rounds at Roland Garros provided plenty of excitement, but the action begins to pick up in Round 3.

At this point, there are no more easy matches. The seeded players begin to play each other and the favorites better start bringing their best efforts, or else they will be knocked out of the tournament.

While there will likely be many exciting battles on both sides of the draw, these will likely be the best matches to watch in the coming days.

No. 15 Gilles Simon vs. No. 18 Sam Querrey

Sam Querrey is America's best chance for a deep run at the French Open, and so far he has been living up to expectations. He defeated Jan Hajek and Lukas Lacko in straight sets to reach the third round of this event for the first time in seven tries.

Meanwhile, Gilles Simon has been just as impressive, although against tougher competition. He needed a great come-from-behind effort to get past former Grand Slam winner Lleyton Hewitt. In his second match, he came back from being one set down to win three sets in a row by a score of 6-1 each.

The key to this match will be Querrey's service game. When he gets his first serve in play, there are few that can beat him. However, the consistency has not been great and he is much worse with his second serve.

Plus, if the American struggles early, the home crowd will be enough to carry the favorite to victory.

No. 11 Nicolas Almagro vs. No. 20 Andreas Seppi

These are two players who have been very good on clay over the years. Andreas Seppi has had some rough showings in recent weeks, but he has more career wins on this surface than anything else.

As for Nicolas Almagro, he follows in the path of fellow Spanish players Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer of becoming clay masters. He has won 67.9 percent of matches on clay, but has a losing record on both hard courts and grass.

So far in this tournament, Almagro has had a much easier time advancing. He has only lost one set and has displayed strong defense throughout two rounds.

Seppi has needed five sets to win each of his first two contests, but the Italian continues to show great resolve. While he certainly will not be favored in this match, it will clearly not be an easy victory for the No. 11 seed.

No. 1 Novak Djokovic vs. No. 26 Grigor Dimitrov

There are not too many players capable of defeating the No. 1 player in the world. Novak Djokovic came into this tournament with a 28-4 record, including a rare win over Rafael Nadal at the Monte Carlo Masters.

However, one player he struggled against was Grigor Dimitrov, who defeated the Serbian in the second round in Madrid. With the crowd rallying behind him, Dimitrov used 13 aces to pull off the massive upset over Djokovic, who was clearly less than 100 percent with his ankle injury.

The No. 1 seed has been quite impressive so far at Roland Garros, especially in his 6-2, 6-0, 6-2 win over Guido Pella. It is tough to imagine him falling this early in a Grand Slam at this stage of his career.

Still, Dimitrov has already proven himself against the favorite and will go in with loads of confidence. If anyone was going to knock out Djokovic in an early round, the Bulgarian is the one to do it.
