French Open 2013 Results: How World's Best Players Fared On Day 4

Jesse ReedJun 8, 2018

After a rainy day squashed much of the action on Tuesday, Roland Garros was a beehive of activity on Wednesday—Day 4 of 15 at the 2013 French Open.

Highlighting the action, many of the world's top players were on display, including Roger Federer, Serena Williams, David Ferrer and Victoria Azarenka—all of whom won their respective matches.

Including doubles matches, the officials at Roland Garros somehow fit 69 total matches onto the schedule on Wednesday, and it'll be another full schedule on tap for Thursday.

Here's a look at how the world's top players fared on Wednesday.

Roger Federer (2) vs. Somdev Devvarman

Devvarman 211

Nobody expected Devvarman to give Federer much of a challenge in Round 2, and he didn't.

The No. 188th-ranked player in the world was unable to withstand Federer's well-rounded game and won just four games in three sets.

As Roland Garros noted on Twitter, the match lasted just 82 minutes, and Federer easily moved into Round 3 without hardly breaking a sweat:

Federer overwhelmed Devvarman from start to finish, gaining a massive advantage on winners, 54-12, and winning seven of 14 break points.

Serena Williams (1) vs. Caroline Garcia

Garcia 12

Just as she did in Round 1, Williams didn't waste any time dispatching her second-round opponent.

Garcia—the No. 144th-ranked player in the world—was helpless to defend against Williams' relentless onslaught of powerful volleys, her pinpoint serves and flawless overall game.

As the WTA noted on Twitter, Williams' victory stretched her current winning streak to 26 matches, which is the third-longest streak of the 2000s:

Williams seems unstoppable right now, and it will surely take an incredible effort for any woman to defeat her this year at the French Open.

David Ferrer (4) vs. Albert Montanes

Montanes 213

In a battle between countrymen, these two Spaniards were far from equals on Wednesday.

Ferrer controlled the action, and though Montanes was more competitive than some of the other lesser seeds on Wednesday, he couldn't challenge Ferrer enough to make the match interesting.

As Tennis Live put it, Ferrer was simply "on fire" and couldn't be defeated, even though Montanes played well:

All in all, it was a tidy win for the world's No. 4-ranked player, and he coasted into Round 2.

Victoria Azarenka (3) vs. Elena Vesnina

AzarenkaX66
Vesnina 14

The reigning Australian Open champ had no trouble with her first-round opponent on Wednesday, as noted by the WTA on Twitter:

Vesnina was overmatched from the outset, and though she did manage to pull herself together to challenge Azarenka in the second set, it was a case of too little, too late.

Though she's a two-time Grand Slam champ, Azarenka has never before gotten out of the quarterfinals at Roland Garros. So while a first-round win is something she's undoubtedly proud of, she has bigger goals in mind.
