French Open 2013 Results: How Top Players Fared On Day 3 at Roland Garros

Jesse ReedMay 28, 2013

Rain was the big story of Day 3 at Roland Garros, but after a lengthy delay the action commenced and some of the world's top players advanced to the second round.

Novak Djokovic (1), Samantha Stosur (9) and Stanislas Wawrinka (9) all competed on Tuesday, and all three of them won their respective matches.

Winning these first-round matches is expected, but as we saw on Monday when Gael Monfils defeated No. 5-ranked Tomas Berdych on Monday, anything is possible on the clay at Roland Garros.

Novak Djokovic vs. David Goffin

After waiting around for what must have felt like days, Djokovic and Goffin finally were cleared to play in the afternoon at Roland Garros.

Goffin tested Djokovic's mettle the entire way, playing with fervor and determination, but in the end it was clear he didn't have enough game to compete on the same level with the No. 1 player in the world on the men's side.

After the match, Djokovic spoke with reporters about the test that the weather provided, per the AP (via USA Today), saying:

"

It was a difficult day, because we have been waiting for hours and hours. I think I warmed up five or six times today. In these conditions ... you need to adjust your game and tactics, because it's quite different than comparing to the conditions when it's dry and sunny.

"

Neither rain, nor Goffin, nor anything Roland Garros threw at Djokovic made any difference in the final outcome, however, and his straight-sets win in adverse conditions was impressive.

Up next for Djokovic will be Argentinian youngster Guido Pella, who endured a five-set match in Round 1 to earn the right to face the top men's player in the world.

Samantha Stosur vs. Kimiko Date-Krumm

The 2010 French Open runner up's first-round match was a veritable walk in the park that took just over an hour. Stosur absolutely hammered her 42-year-old opponent, as noted by Roland Garros on Twitter:

Stosur didn't lose until the 10th game, and she dominated the action from start to finish. In the end, she'd won nearly twice as many points as her opponent and had a 21-8 edge on winners.

Stosur's next opponent will be France's Kristina Mladenovic, who won in straight sets over Lauren Davis in Round 1.

Stanislas Wawrinka vs. Thiemo De Bakker

It wasn't pretty, but Wawrinka managed to move on to Round 2 after beating De Bakker on Tuesday.

He overcame 50 unforced errors, poor serves and a maddening four-of-15 break points won to gut out the win.

Thankfully, after withdrawing from the Rome Masters with a thigh injury, Wawrinka said he "felt no pain" in this match, according to ESPN.com's Kamakshi Tandon:

Next up for Wawrinka is the winner of the first-round match between Vasek Pospisil and Horacio Zeballos—one of the many matches postponed on Tuesday because of the inclement weather.
