French Open 2013 Results: Most Surprising Results of Round 1
The excitement at Roland Garros is just starting, but there are already some talented players who are done for the tournament.
Over the first three days of play, most of the top seeds were able to advance to the second round. Some cruised like Roger Federer, and others struggled a bit like Rafael Nadal against Daniel Brands. However, both are still alive in the event, which is the only important thing.
Some stars were not as lucky, and they dropped their first-round matches at the French Open. These results made up the most surprising outcomes so far.

Gael Monfils def. Tomas Berdych
As the No. 5 seed in the French Open, Tomas Berdych had high expectations. Unfortunately, he simply became the highest seed to lose in the first round.
The Czech player had at least reached the quarterfinals of the past two Grand Slam tournaments. However, his opening-round match against Gael Monfils became one of the best displays of tennis you will see in a long time.
These two players battled for over four hours in five sets, three of which went to a tiebreak. In the end, Berdych could not handle the opposing serve and allowed 26 aces.
Monfils has the talent to be one of the better players in the world and has reached the semifinals of this event in the past. However, injuries have derailed his career to this point.
Fortunately, he appears to be as strong as ever as he looks to go deep in this event.
Daniel Gimeno-Traver def. Juan Monaco
Although Juan Monaco has rarely found consistent success, the fact that he was unable to make it out of the first round is quite surprising.
The No. 17 seed has been very strong on clay throughout his career, winning 64.6 percent of his matches on that surface. Of his eight career titles, seven of them occurred on clay, including his most recent tournament in Dusseldorf, Germany.
However, this momentum and experience did not help him escape the first round against Daniel Gimeno-Traver.
After winning the first two sets, the Argentine could not close out his opponent in the third set. Gimeno-Traver won the tiebreak and then went on to win 6-4 in the final two sets to win the match despite 64 unforced errors.
Monaco reached the fourth round of last year's French Open, but could not manage to get to the second this year. The fact that he is nowhere near as good on other surfaces makes this even more disappointing, as he is likely to struggle for the rest of the season.
Urszula Radwanska def. Venus Williams
It has been a while since Venus Williams was considered one of the best in the sport, but she still has loads of talent. The seven-time Grand Slam champion should at least be making her way out of the first round on a regular basis.
This did not happen at the 2013 French Open, as the American fell after an outstanding match against Urszula Radwanska.
The two competitors each won one of the first two sets via tiebreak. In the final set, it simply appeared that Williams did not have enough left in the tank and she was broken twice by her younger counterpart.
After three hours and 19 minutes, the veteran simply could not stick around in the tournament. She played well, but it was not enough to overcome her opponent.
Radwanska, on the other hand, showed that she has a bright future ahead of her and could end up being a legitimate competitor down the line.
