French Open 2013 Results: Favorites in Championship Form Early

Kyle NewportMay 27, 2013

The 2013 French Open got underway earlier on Sunday, and Serena Williams was one of many favorites to breeze through the first round.

Like most opening rounds, the favorites had little trouble getting past their first match. The first round served as a nice tune-up for the top seeds.

Not every seeded player survived, such as No. 11 Nadia Petrova, but the stars of the tournament easily moved on.

The first round will continue on through Monday, but here are the contenders who easily moved on to the next round.

Live scores and full brackets for both the men and women can be found on the official Roland Garros website.

Men's Bracket

Roger Federer (SUI) eased past Pablo Carreno-Busta (ESP) in three sets. He won each set, 6-2, 6-2, 6-3. It wasn't as dominant as fans are used to seeing out of him, but it was good enough to win with very little doubt. The No. 2 seed had 33 winners, but he also committed 19 unforced errors.

The second-seeded player took advantage of his serves. He won the point in 83 percent of his first serves. He also was perfect on seven break points.

David Ferrer (ESP) had a little tougher time, but he still won easily in three sets. By the scores of 6-4,6-3, 6-4, he beat Marinko Matosevic (AUS) to advance to the next round.

His sloppy play was the reason for a prolonged match. He committed 22 unforced errors, but he managed to do well returning the ball. He won 55 percent of the points when he received the ball.

Women's Bracket

On this side, there was very little struggle by two of the top seeds in the field.

Serena Williams (USA) dominated Anna Tatishvili (GEO) 6-0, 6-1. She owned just about every aspect of the match and made quick work of her opponent.

She won 88 percent of the points on her first serves and 73 percent on her second serves. She had 27 winners compared to only four by Tatishvili. The No. 1 seed showed why she deserved that ranking and looks like she will be a tough out in this tournament.

One of Williams' biggest competitors, Sara Errani (ITA), cruised through her first match. She won 6-1, 6-2 over Arantxa Rus (NED).

Errani played a fairly clean match. She committed only 15 unforced errors, but she excelled at returning serves. She won the point on 31 of 44 of her opponent's serves, which equals 70 percent.

These two women could be destined to play against each other in the semifinals, and they will be tough to beat if they play the way they did on Sunday.
