WWE/WCW/TNA Mother's Day: Mae Young and Moments Only a Mother Could Love
Where would professional wrestling be without the patented mother's storyline? In all honesty, sports entertainment could do without the tomfoolery apparent with many mothers—real and fake—but the pop culture aspect of it all just wouldn't be as fun.
Wrestling fans are no strangers to the mommy storyline. Sometimes it's a budding pregnancy with a popular WWE Diva. Sometimes it's a storyline arc culminating in Buff Bagwell's mother suspended on a forklift.
But it seems every time a mama storyline crosses paths with a national wrestling promotion, the results are memorable for all the wrong reasons.
This batch of storylines are assessed on unnecessary length and how negatively they impacted the overall product. Storylines like these are the reason the remote control was invented.
5. Raven's Mother Tries to Get Him Help on WCW Nitro
1 of 5WCW invested a lot in the Raven character. Raven was a dark, self-pitying rich kid who grew to resent his surroundings. Choosing to surround himself with a stable of sycophants called "Raven's Flock," the character was one of the hottest things going during Nitro's heyday.
As the character evolved, fans saw more of his spoiled side. With WCW in the mood of interjecting mothers into storylines, it followed up on the puzzling Judy Bagwell storyline by introducing Raven's mother.
Mrs. Levy attempted to coddle her tortured son by seeking therapy, but he resisted at almost every turn.
4. Buff Bagwell and Kanyon Compete in Judy Bagwell on a Pole Match
2 of 5The XYZ on a pole match was a staple of Vince Russo. Unfortunately, that staple punctured the ailing heart of WCW.
One of these gems saw Judy Bagwell—mother of Buff Bagwell—chained to a forklift as Kanyon battled Bagwell for her services.
Anything involving Judy Bagwell can be lumped in there with the handful of factors leading to WCW's death. The overexposure of Mrs. Bagwell made it impossible to take Buff seriously, thereby squandering his once-unlimited potential.
Thankfully, Bagwell won the match, rescuing his mother from both the forklift and Kanyon's tyranny.
3. Snitsky Causes Lita to Miscarry
3 of 5Lita and Kane were strange bedfellows during a 2004 storyline arc on Raw. Despite initially being with Kane against her will, Lita managed to become pregnant with the big red monster's unborn child. How romantic.
The birth was not to be, however, as newcomer Gene Snitsky's chair shot to Kane bumped him into Lita during a no-disqualification match. The accident caused Lita to miscarry, turning Snitsky heel and giving him considerable mileage out of the catchphrase "It wasn't my fault!"
The Snitsky character never quite took off, as he could never shake the association with such a horrifying program.
2. Mae Young Gives Birth to Hornswoggle
4 of 5Mae Young giving birth to a hand is so year 2000. On a recent episode of Raw, WWE decided to revisit the 90-year-old Diva's pregnancy woes by having her give birth yet again.
This time, the baby was polarizing little person Hornswoggle. He celebrated his own birth with cigar in hand.
1. The Claire Lynch-AJ Styles Fiasco
5 of 5In 2012, TNA brought in a terrible actress to portray the role of a character that was even worse. Claire Lynch was the pregnant, troubled junkie who was the explanation behind a rumored affair between AJ Styles and Dixie Carter.
Lynch quickly turned heel, lashing out at AJ, who she claimed was the father of her baby. Due to online bullying of Julia Reilly—the actress who portrayed Claire Lynch—the storyline was curtailed after Reilly quit.
AJ was vindicated on Impact when it was announced by her legal representation that she was never pregnant to begin with.
The drawn-out storyline was not without its bright spots, including Daniels and Kazarian hosting an entertaining baby shower in Lynch's honor. But one could only imagine how bad this could have gotten had Lynch stuck around.
