NFL Draft 2013: Full Overview of Results, Grades and Undrafted Free Agents

Timothy RappJun 4, 2018

Three days and 254 picks. Hours upon hours of coverage. Multiple trades, countless rumors and enough second-guessing to make you average debate team joyously weep.

The 2013 NFL draft most certainly did not disappoint. Despite talk that there was a serious lack of talent atop the board, this year's draft featured a lot more uncertainty than in years past and enough depth to make the later rounds truly intriguing.

Let's take a comprehensive look back on the proceedings from Thursday to Saturday.

Top Storylines

One of the biggest stories of the first round was that two of the draft's most publicized players, quarterback Geno Smith and linebacker Manti Te'o, weren't selected. Neither would last long into the second day, however, as Te'o was selected No. 38 by the San Diego Chargers and Smith went off the board a pick later to the New York Jets.

Mark Sanchez, David Garrard, Tim Tebow and now Smith in New York—what a fun quarterback controversy that will be this summer.

The first round was all about the offensive lineman, as six of the first 11 picks were big uglies and nine offensive lineman in total were selected in the first round.

Trades were also a major theme of the first round, with five on Thursday, including the Miami Dolphins surprising everyone by trading up to the No. 3 pick and selecting outside linebacker Dion Jordan.

The biggest winners of the first round appeared to be the Minnesota Vikings.

After ending the surprising fall down the board of defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd at No. 23 and adding cornerback Xavier Rhodes at No. 25 (acquired from the Seattle Seahawks in the Percy Harvin trade), the team traded back into the first round and selected explosive wide receiver prospect Cordarrelle Patterson at No. 29.

One of the biggest surprises—and some folks would argue it was a reach—came at No. 16, when the Buffalo Bills selected EJ Manuel, the only quarterback taken in the first round. Just three quarterbacks were taken in the first three rounds.

Meanwhile, no running backs were selected in the first round for the first time since 1963

Controversial cornerback Tyrann Mathieu came off the board in the third round after being selected by the Arizona Cardinals, while the biggest shock of day three came when the Philadelphia Eagles selected quarterback Matt Barkley with the first pick of the fourth round.

Quarterback Ryan Nassib also dropped into the fourth round. Running back Marcus Lattimore—one of the draft's most talented players who was marred by knee injuries in consecutive years—was picked in the fourth round by the San Francisco 49ers.

Justice Cunningham, a tight end from South Carolina, was this year's Mr. Irrelevant. He was selected with the 254th pick by the Indianapolis Colts.

Grades

TeamGradeNotes
CowboysD+Travis Frederick was a reach in first round...Gavin Escobar and Terrance Williams are good players but luxury picks...team didn't address offensive tackle or defensive line at all.
EaglesB+Lane Johnson and Zach Ertz will make instant impact...Barkley was a great value...team added two potential starters down the line in seventh round with DE Joe Kruger and CB Jordan Poyer...Chip Kelly's first class is athletic, scheme-versatile bunch.
GiantsGot excellent value in first four rounds and did well to add depth on both lines...fourth-rounder Ryan Nassib could be future trade chip
RedskinsC-Plugged needs in secondary by drafting CB David Amerson and safeties Phillip Thomas and Bacarri Rambo...no star in this class after trading away first-round pick last year in Robert Griffin III deal.
BearsCInexperienced Kyle Long was huge reach in first round...Jon Bostic slight reach, but he and Khaseem Greene could be starting duo at LB in foreseeable future.
LionsAddressed major needs at DE (Ziggy Ansah), CB (Darius Slay) and on offensive line (Larry Warford) with solid players in first three rounds...Ansah is a boom or bust prospect, however, with crazy potential but limited experience.
PackersB+DE Datone Jones and RB Eddie Lacy were excellent picks in first two rounds...team added a lot of depth in later rounds at positions of need.
VikingsA+ Improved positions of need with excellent value picks in first round...Pair of Penn State linebackers, Gerald Hodges and Michael Mauti, could end up being major steals.
BuccaneersTrading away first-round pick for Darrelle Revis should pay immediate dividends...QB Mike Glennon could push Josh Freeman for starting job with strong camp...added solid defensive depth in the secondary and on defensive line.
FalconsB-Focus on CB in first two rounds (Desmond Trufant, Robert Alford) should improve pass defense next season.
PanthersBIdentified biggest weakness (DT) and dramatically upgraded it in first two rounds with Star Lotulelei and Kawann Short....for a team with many needs, only selecting five players was fairly surprising.
Saints BOnly had five picks but made the most of them with solid additions at FS (Kenny Vaccaro), OT (Terron Armstead) and DT (John Jenkins) with first three selections.
49ersA-Added a ton of depth with 11 selections... S Eric Reid was a slight reach in first round, but DE Tank Carradine, DE Corey Lemonier, WR Quinton Patton and RB Marcus Lattimore were all fantastic values.
CardinalsA-Top to bottom, Cardinals had a very solid draft... G Jonathan Cooper, LB Kevin Minter and DE Alex Okafor should be instant starters...Mathieu was a curious pick with Patrick Peterson already an elite punt returner...Stepfan Taylor and Andre Ellington will compete to start at RB.
RamsATavon Austin gives the offense a much-needed playmaker while Alec Ogletree was a steal at No. 30...S T.J. McDonald and G Barrett Jones were excellent values at need positions.
SeahawksCTrading first pick for Percy Harvin will make offense scary...Some truly curious picks throughout, though I doubted last year's draft class as well and was quickly proven wrong.
BillsBManuel may have been a reach but Bills needed to address the position...WRs Robert Woods and Marquise Goodwin addressed a major need, while LB Kiko Alonso should be an instant contributor.
DolphinsB-Overpayed for Jordan, but he has the potential to be dynamic...CB Jamar Taylor fills a major need and was nice pick in second round...solid if unspectacular class throughout.
JetsBCB Dee Milliner was perfect pick at No. 9...Sheldon Richardson a very good player but not a great fit for 3-4 scheme...nabbing Smith in second round a solid value...future of front office and Rex Ryan tied to first three picks.
PatriotsC-Hate to doubt Bill Belichick but Patriots reached on several prospects after second-round selection Jamie Collins...not a dynamic draft class.
BengalsAFirst four picks (TE Tyler Eifert, RB Giovani Bernard, De Margus Hunt and Shawn Williams) addressed needs with excellent values...Bengals continue to build contender through the draft.
BrownsCGot exciting talent with Barkevious Mingo with first pick, but only drafted five players despite needs across the field...not drafting a quarterback was a major surprise.
RavensA-Rebuilt defense with strong value picks in first four rounds (S Matt Elam, LB Arthur Brown, DT Brandon Williams, DE John Simon)...added a lot of depth with 10 total selections.
SteelersB+OLB Jarvis Jones and WR Markus Wheaton are perfect fits for Steelers...RB Le'Veon Bell was slight reach but could be day one starter.
ColtsC+I don't see first-round pick Bjoern Werner as a good fit for 3-4...team did well to add depth on both lines.
JaguarsBLuke Joeckel and John Cyprien will make immediate impact...Ace Sanders and Denard Robinson are intriguing playmakers out wide.
TexansBWR DeAndre Hopkins fills obvious need... OLB Sam Montgomery in the third round could be one of the steals of the draft.
TitansBPairing first-rounder Chance Warmack with Andy Levitre at OG dramatically improves running game....WR Justin Hunter a great value in second round...team addressed pretty much every need in later rounds.
BroncosC+DT Sylvester Williams was solid first-round selection, but team reached on Montee Ball in second round.
ChargersBDJ Fluker better suited at RT, not LT...Te'o and WR Keenan Allen were excellent values.
ChiefsCOdd draft by Andy Reid...LT Eric Fisher will be a stud...did team really need to draft a TE (Travis Kelce) and RB (Knile Davis) in third and fourth rounds?
RaidersBRaiders did well to add additional picks through trade...DJ Hayden could end up being top CB in draft...LT Menelik Watson is a project with high upside...QB Tyler Wilson could end up being top QB in draft.
