Alex Ovechkin, Simeon Varlamov, Sean Avery: Only Human

Martin AveryApr 23, 2009

"Oh, the humanity," radio announcer Herbert Morrison said.

Henrik Lundqvist and Chris Drury looked superhuman as the New York Rangers upset the Washington Capitals for the third time in their first round NHL playoff series, and Alex Ovechkin, Simeon Varlamov, and Sean Avery showed they are human.

Overchkin finally scored a goal after taking 60 shots on Lundqvist, and Varlamov finally let in a couple of goals after stopping 60 shots by the Rangers. Avery picked up a pair of penalties at the end of the game and drove his coach crazy.

Lundqvist made several amazing saves on Ovechkin and the Caps, while Rangers captain Chris Drury, playing injured, scored the winning goal.

Varlamov was unbeatable in Game 3, almost unbeatable in Game 2, and merely human in Game 4. He did not look good on the Drury goal.

The other Rangers goal would have beat anyone.

Ovechkin was at the top of his game, particularly in the third period, but one goal in four games is well shy of his superstar pace.

At that rate, he wouldn't score again until Game 8.

Avery took two penalties at crucial times. "Avery's up to his old antics" his critics will say, trotting out the new cliche. "Bench him!" some have suggested.

If Ovechkin had scored on the power play while Avery was in the penalty box, tying the game and going on to win it in overtime, Avery would have looked much worse.

As it stands, the Rangers' amazing penalty killers saved him as well as the game.

Did he know they would? If there is one thing you can count on the Rangers to do well, it's kill a penalty, even in the dying minutes of a deathly close and pivotal game.
