Sweet 16 Bracket: Matchups Destined to Be Buzzer-Beaters

Richard LangfordJun 8, 2018

As March Madness rolls into the Sweet 16, it promises to deliver some amazing matchups.

So while this tournament has already produced plenty of drama, the best is yet to come. Here are three matchups that are going to ensure that with some unforgettable buzzer-beaters.

Ohio State (2) vs. Arizona (6)

At first glance, the Buckeyes would appear to be headed to a semi-comfortable win. The Buckeyes have won 10 straight and carry their lofty No. 2 seed against tournament afterthought Arizona.

However, the Buckeyes looked less than dominant in the round of 32, as they needed a late three by Aaron Craft to eke out a 78-75 victory over Iowa State.

Meanwhile, Arizona has been outstanding in the tournament, as the Wildcats have beaten Belmont and Harvard by a combined 40 points.

This game features some great matchups. For starters, we have good friends Thad Matta and Sean Miller battling coaching wits (the two once shared an office as assistants at Miami of Ohio).

Then there is the point guard battle. Craft is a well-rounded point guard who is an excellent defender, and he will need that defense when he tries to slow down Mark Lyons. The senior guard has been outstanding, racking up 50 points in his two tournament games.

Kansas (1) vs. Michigan (4)

Kansas has advanced to the Sweet 16, but other than a late stretch to pull away from the Tar Heels in the round of 32, the Jayhawks have not been at their best.

This is understandable, as dynamic freshman Ben McLemore has been off his game. For the season, he averaged  16.2 points per game. However, he is just 2-of-14 in this tournament while averaging 6.5 points.

Meanwhile, Michigan's leader, Trey Burke had a similar rough start, as he went for six points on a 2-of-12 performance against South Dakota State in the tourney opener. But he bounced back big with 18 points, seven assists and two steals as the Wolverines blew out fifth-seeded VCU.

Both of these teams have plenty of talent surrounding their stars. However, both teams will be hoping for big performances to lead them in this even matchup.

Duke (2) vs. Michigan State (3)

Tom Izzo vs. Mike Krzyzewski—coaching matchups in the tournament aren't going to get any better than this.

Having these two at the helm almost ensures a great game, but that's not all. Both of these teams are talented top seeds.

Both of these teams have a solid inside presence led by Mason Plumlee for Duke and Derrick Nix for the Spartans.

It will be key for the Spartans to establish a physical superiority down low since Duke is better suited to do damage from the outside. The Blue Devils finished the regular season as fifth best in three-point percentage.

The Spartans enter off a dominant performance by taking down Memphis, 70-48, in the round of 32. Meanwhile, Duke put together a nice second half to survive Creighton, 66-50.

This is going to be a great game when these two heavyweights go toe-to-toe.
