Breaking News: Roger Federer Loses to Compatriot—“Et Tu Stanislas?”

Thomas VazquezApr 16, 2009

Apparently three players on tour now question Roger Federer’s dominance.

In what was a shocking upset at Monte Carlo, world No. 2 Roger Federer was upset by Stanislas Wawrinka, a close friend on the tour and the other half of the gold-medal winning duo in Beijing.

A week after proclaiming that he was "happy" the hard court season was over, Federer is probably rethinking that statement after a 6-4, 7-5 round of 16 loss to Wawrinka on the usually friendly clay of Monte Carlo.

Wawrinka has been playing superb tennis of late. Many will remember how hard he made Rafael Nadal work for Nadal’s straight set victory in Key Biscayne just two weeks ago. Also no slouch on clay, Wawrinka lost to Novak Djokovic in the finals of the Masters Series Tournament in Rome in 2008.

However, to take down the second best player in the world on clay in a tournament where he has been the perennial runner-up has to be the biggest win of Wawrinka’s career.

For Federer, this has to be a shot to his ego. Never has his dominance been questioned from his own country, and to lose to a close friend and someone that he has helped throughout his career must be very frustrating for the former World No. 1.

Given the bizarre circumstances of the week (Federer getting married and then taking a wild card entry into the tournament), Federer must be questioning his decision to come to Monte Carlo.

What was supposed to be a week of rest and relaxation has now been turned into a week of questioning and frustration.

As has been the story in all of Federer’s losses in the past few months, his game has been riddled with errors, especially from the backhand side.

A new wrinkle has been the indecisiveness that seems to overcome Federer toward the end of the match. It was as if he was not sure whether he wanted to press or lay back, shoot the forehand down the line or go cross-court.

Fans will have to wonder, given the sudden decline in play, if Federer still possesses the concentration necessary to make the magical climb back to the top ranking.

Not to take any credit away from Wawrinka; however, he is not the caliber of player Federer should be dropping a set to, let alone losing an entire match.

Given his concentration level in this match, one has to wonder what happens if the baby comes as planned in July, while at Wimbledon.

At least Federer has some free time to spend with his new bride while preparing for Rome—time off he probably did not want.
