While Lionel Messi is the most mentioned of the FC Barcelona squad, there are others in the squad who contribute. They may not receive the same amount of publicity as Messi.

Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta are among the important players in La Blaugrana. They deserve to be mentioned although briefly.

The purpose of this article is to compare Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta in terms of importance. The tools used were examples of their contributions, accomplishments and style of play while at Barca.

The use of personal experience as well as research from Internet sources (including Twitter popularity and Google results) were included in this comparison.

Xavi Hernandez

I had the privilege of seeing Xavi Hernandez in action when Barca visited Miami, Florida. Xavi participated in the 2011 Herballife World Football match between La Blaugrana and Chivas of Guadalajara.

During the match, Seydou Keita felt pressure from opposing Chivas of Guadalajara players at all sides. Xavi was able to come to the aid of Keita and remove some of the pressure.

The FC Barcelona website reinforced that image in its review of Xavi. They mentioned Xavi’s adaptability within different areas of the field.

Xavi was the recipient of the UEFA Euro Player of the Tournament in 2008 award. When I typed Xavi Hernandez in Google, he received 5,060,000 hits at 11:47 a.m. on February 23, 2013.

Xavi has 40,782 followers on his Twitter Account when it was assessed on the same day at Noon. Unfortunately, Xavi recently suffered a hamstring injury and was out for 15 days.

It is these issues that have affected Xavi in his ability to contribute to La Blaugrana.

Andres Iniesta

Andres Iniesta appears to be a more complete player. According to the FC Barcelona website, Iniesta is praised for his versatility as a midfielder for the club.

Iniesta was able to prove his worth when he scored the last-minute goal that won Spain the 2010 World Cup. Iniesta received second place in the FIFA Ballon D’Or awards during the same year.

Iniesta received 5,000,000 hits from Google when I entered his name at 11:50 a.m. on February 23, 2013. Iniesta had 5,374,221 Twitter followers when his account was assessed  at 11:54 a.m. on the same day.

ESPN-FC commented about Iniesta’s humility in their profile of the midfielder. This is also a plus when it comes to importance in a team.

The majority of the people in sports tend to look positively at those who have down-to-earth personalities.

While there are people who will rank athletes in importance, this is not possible. Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta have different styles which complement each other.

It is the style of these great players along with others at Barca that make it one of the European powerhouses. I hope these styles will unite in the second leg of the Round of 16 UEFA Champions League match.
