New York Yankees: The Captain's Back

Paul RaymondMar 23, 2009

Now that the World Baseball Classic is over, MLB players will start heading back to their respective teams.

For the New York Yankees that means the return of the captain, Derek Jeter.

The Yankees couldn’t be happier to get their leader back, you know after all the roster changes and that whole Alex Rodriguez thing. So now that Jeter is back with the team, when will he suit up again?

The answer is pretty simple just look at the schedule. Tuesday night the Bronx Bombers face the Boston Red Sox at Steinbrenner Field.

“Are we surprised? No,” Girardi said. “I’m going to put him in the lineup.”

Peter Abraham of the LoHud Yankees Blog reports that the team would of ideally had Jeter wait until Thursday to play. Teams don’t really want their players flying cross country and playing right away this earlier in camp, and who could blame them.

In the end. the Yankees let Jeter decide when he returns and he obviously said as soon as possible.

Did he choose the Red Sox game as his return? Highly doubtful, but its a nice thought. The captain returns home and his first game is against the hated Red Sox.

I’ll say this and I’m sure other Yankee fans agree—Spring Training has been going for weeks but the WBC has kept me from really getting interested in it.

Tomorrow night, when Derek Jeter takes the plate against Tim Wakefield, the baseball season officially begins.
