Rookie WRs Who Will Outplay Their Draft Value 📈
Where: Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome, Minneapolis
When: Sunday, Nov. 11, at 1:00 p.m. ET
TV: Fox and DirecTV 705 (NFL Sunday Ticket)
The nosediving Vikings must capture some sort of momentum to stay in the playoff race, and that will be made all the more difficult without their top playmaker, Percy Harvin. The dynamic receiver is listed as doutbful for this marquee NFC North rematch (h/t ESPN).
Minnesota got the best of the Lions in Detroit earlier this season, but the Lions have reeled off two straight wins and will be bent on getting revenge in this one.
Detroit QB Matthew Stafford is finally looking more like the man who threw for over 5,000 yards in 2011, and Mikel Leshoure has finally brought some hope to the running game. That balance in the Lions offense wasn't present the last time these two teams met.
The Lions need this game badly with two home games looming against the Green Bay Packers and Houston Texans, and the Vikings need to go into the bye week on a high note.
Harvin's absence will likely be too much for the Vikings to overcome. Detroit's defense has vastly improved from a year ago and can afford to stack the box against Adrian Peterson to force Christian Ponder to beat it through the air.
With two teams in the division likely headed to the playoffs already, one of these squads must separate itself from the other and make a push toward the postseason.
Atlanta Falcons (8-0) at New Orleans Saints (3-5)
Where: Mercedez-Benz Superdome, New Orleans
When: Sunday, Nov. 11, at 1:00 p.m. ET
TV: Fox and DirecTV 706 (NFL Sunday Ticket)
As Mike Smith's team continues to squeak by every week, anticipation will continue to build and turn every Falcons game into must-see TV. Sunday's NFC South showdown with the resurgent Saints is no exception.
QB Matt Ryan is having an MVP-caliber season but does benefit from an outstanding supporting cast. His counterpart, Drew Brees, has single-handedly kept this Saints team afloat with yet another spectacular year.
New Orleans has won three of its past four games after starting in a seemingly insurmountable 0-4 hole, but the Saints still have plenty of questions on the defensive side of the ball. With Brees under center, though, no offseason scandal or coaching change has been able to remove the team from NFL relevancy.
In yet another contest with their flickering playoff hopes on the line, expect the Saints to be the team that takes down Atlanta for the first time in 2012.
It's bound to happen sooner or later for the Falcons, and it will likely come at the hands of a divisional foe on Sunday.
San Diego Chargers (4-4) at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-4)
Where: Raymond James Stadium, Tampa
When: Sunday, Nov. 11, at 1:00 p.m. ET
TV: CBS and DirecTV 711 (NFL Sunday Ticket)
Who knows what to make of the Bucs? They have the best run defense but the worst pass defense, which means no lead is safe. RB Doug Martin has been phenomenal in his rookie campaign, and Josh Freeman is being much more judicious throwing the football.
Two consecutive road wins at Minnesota and Oakland are impressive regardless of the circumstances, but the Chargers themselves are just one game behind in the AFC West.
The only big reservation about San Diego, though, is that half of its wins in 2012 have come against the Kansas City Chiefs—probably the worst team in the league, other than maybe the Jacksonville Jaguars.
This is a landmark game for the Chargers and for the job status of head coach Norv Turner, most likely.
Greg Schiano, meanwhile, has the young Bucs playing extremely hard for him, while Turner seems locked in a perpetual struggle to put a quality product on the field.
Tampa Bay hasn't lost a game by more than seven points, which shows that its record could be even better. As dangerous as the Bucs offense has become with Martin's emergence, they should push over the .500 mark with a comfortable victory at home.
Houston Texans (7-1) at Chicago Bears (7-1)
Where: Soldier Field, Chicago
When: Sunday, Nov. 11, at 8:20 p.m. ET
TV: NBC
Super Bowl preview, anyone?
Two of the best backs in the league—Houston's Arian Foster and the Bears' Matt Forte—will try to scratch for yards against two of the NFL's most stout run defenses.
The Texans are second in the AFC in turnover differential at plus eight, while the Bears lead all teams with an astounding plus-16 mark.
Even though Chicago QB Jay Cutler is reputedly an often erratic gunslinger, he has cut down the mistakes enough—and gotten plenty of help from his defense—to lead the NFC's current No. 2 seed. He threw half of his eight interceptions in a Week 2 loss at Green Bay.
Matt Schaub has managed to stay under center for Houston despite numerous injuries in past years. It helps that he has only been sacked 10 times all season, tied with Peyton Manning for the second-fewest among starters.
With all the pressure the Bears can generate, Schaub will have to continue getting the ball out quickly.
Andre Johnson must more often than not get the best of dominant Bears CB Charles Tillman, who has a penchant for punching out the football and making game-changing plays.
The winner in this one will be the team that makes the fewest mistakes. As wild as Cutler has been in the past, he has favorite target Brandon Marshall to turn to—and Forte behind him. He also has slightly more experience in big games than Schaub does, which should give the Bears just enough of an edge to pull out a low-scoring affair at home.
