Players to Watch
Deshaun Thomas, Ohio State
Thomas will be the central figure in a Buckeyes offense after Jared Sullinger left in the most recent NBA draft. He was already emerging as an integral cog in the Buckeyes’ frontcourt but now will be given the charge of holding it down as its main piece. His performance will be telling of how the new-look Buckeyes’ season will unfold.
C.J. Wilcox, Washington
Wilcox is one of the biggest names of the tournament. He’s taken over the lead role in the Huskies offense due to departures to the NBA. He’s shown he can handle it, scoring at will a season ago and putting up over 16 ppg in the 2012 NIT.
Naismith Bracket Prediction: Ohio State
The fourth-ranked Buckeyes are the class of this tournament. Thad Matta’s teams are rarely unprepared, meaning they’ll be ready for this early-season test of their resolve following the loss of Sullinger to the NBA. They won’t get to steamroll through the lesser competition of the Springfield bracket but they’ll get their shot at those schools during the Campus Round.
